Hi: You're site is great, thanks. I closely followed all your directions and downloaded all software. I also tried LQFix; Killbox;and etremover. it seems i still have the pokapoka virus; for ej. "C:\windows\system32\elitefoe32.exe"still appears in my startup window in sys config. Also McAfee keeps bringing up that it finds "AdClicker-BA.dr" but it cant remove it or quaranteen or anything.

One additional note, when i was trying to remove norton, to install McAfee, before I got "SymNRT", i tried manually erasing folders and I erased a "symantec" folder that seems to have benn used by other programs. when i open superlex, oxford dictionary, i get the message " C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization. "

Welcome to GTG.

It's not showing up in the log here. Did you uncheck it in msconfig by any chance?

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'
o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\DOCUME~1\MARTIN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\2005911175151_mcinfo.exe /insfin

Restart your computer. Post the logs for HijackThis and Ewido.

Yes, because it's hiding from us when you unchecked it. Just check it back, restart and do the fixes I gave you. When you get to the HijackThis fixes, just add that elitefoe32.exe entry to be checked also and then fixed...

Hi: ok i ran cleanup, ewido and then hijack this. I checked:

C:\DOCUME~1\MARTIN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\2005911175151_mcinfo.exe /insfin

and I clicked fix. I'm not sure how to save hijackthis in c as you recommended. i moved the zip file to c:\HJT but when i unzip im not sure where it goes. i have saved the backup which lists the same file as above.

here are my logs:

What program are you using to unzip it? It will/should ask you where you want to unzip the file. Choose C:\hjt\ (it will create that hjt folder for you if you type it in like that). We only mention this because HijackThis will create backups and just in case we need it, you don't want it to be deleted (since it's in the temp folder).

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\DOCUME~1\MARTIN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\2005911175151_mcinfo.exe /insfin
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\elitefoe32.exe

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\DOCUME~1\MARTIN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\2005911175151_mcinfo.exe

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

PS One additional note, when i was trying to remove norton, to install McAfee, before I got "SymNRT", i tried manually erasing folders and I erased a "symantec" folder that seems to have benn used by other programs. when i open superlex, oxford dictionary, i get the message " C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization. "
Any ideas? did i erase something i shouldn't have? thanks again, nicole

I'm not very sure about that Superlex problem. Can you try reinstalling that program? I don't think they should be directly related to each other unless Symantec made it. Ask this in the software section if you still have problems.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Thanks, I just noticed in the Startup tab of system configuration these two files
" pokapoka73 C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka73.exe" and
" pokapoka70 C:\WINDOWS\\\etb\\pokapoka70.exe"

They were unchecked, I'm guessing I shouldcheck them, run hijackthis and then check fix. but i will wait to here from you. nicole

OK, do this:

Check those back in msconfig.
Restart your computer.
Run the LQFix file again.
Run HijackThis and fix those entries for pokapoka if found.
Restart and post your HijackThis log here for me to take a final look at it.

OK, not sure what you're talking about here. Are you talking about the LQFix program now or Windows that's having that problem?

Can you boot into Normal Mode? Still have problems?

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Try using another keyboard and see if the same problems arise. If so, then run BOTH these scans:

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. You may also use Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here.
