I have triied unsuccessfully to rid my computor of the Vundo trojan. From what I have been able to read here the first step to help is to supply a Hijack this log. Thank you for you anticipated help and guidance.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please REBOOT your computer into Safe Mode.

• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

3. Download and install CleanUp!

• Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
• Set the program up as follows:
• Click "Options..."
• Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
• Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

[*]Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
[*]It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

It appears that Vundo has been removed becasue norton doesnt display virus alert anymore but there is a new problem, all icons and start menu have dissappeared from the desktop all that remains is the background. The computer still responds, and programs can be launched using the Windows Task Manager yet there is no longer a Desktop, any suggestions?

Please try the following: (This problem is quite unusual with this problem)



Right click on http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Login as usual and now right click on your Desktop and go to Properties. Next go to Desktop tab->Customize Desktop button->Web tab. Uncheck everything listed there. Then delete all the entries listed except for 'My Current Home Page'. Click OK and OK.

Hi
I was able to regain my desktop icons by systematically resarting my machine with all startup programs and and all services unchecked, then rechecking them in groups until I found that a program in startup called"ipmon32.exe" was clearing the desktop.
Now i tried to unistall this program through control panel"Add/.remove" but it says that some files are missing and unable to remove.
So as long as I startup in a selective startup without this program checked I am good. Now i would like to grt the removed and the registry cleaned up so this will not be part of the startup program tab.

ipmon.exe is a file belomgimg to the froup IPMonitor which comes bundled with a lot od ISP programs.

I have created a new retore point that boots up ok but still shows ipmon32 on the strtup tab. I manually removed the program.

ipmom.exe relates to a program (IPInsightMonitor)installed by the IPS Sasktel. It is a common practice for ISP to do this. It is possible to remove this service nut be aware that some will not work without ir.

Tell me what you want done and if I am sure that it won't hurt your system, I'll do my best to help you out.

the system is working okay now, but I have some orphaned entries in the registry i believe that point to programs that are not on the computor any more. I would like to remove all traces of the ip insight software. It still has 2 entries on the startup tab when you use msconfig. Also I can't remove references to AOL services through add remove programs, so I get an error when connected to the internet first time. I donot use AOL and need no software for it on this machine.

We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

• Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  
• Click the Extended tab.
  
• Scroll down until you find the service.
  ===>AOL Connectivity Service
  
• Click once on the service to highlight it.
  
• Click Stop
  
• Right-Click on the service.
  
• Click on 'Properties'
  
• Select the 'General' tab
  
• Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  
• From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  
• Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.


B. We will now delete the service:

1. Open HJT

2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service

3. Copy/Paste AOL ACS in the space provided and click OK

4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

5. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

6. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\AOL<==Folder

7. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

8. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

• First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
  
  • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
  • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
  • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
  • Close the window with ok
• Please RUN HijackThis.
  . Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  
  
• Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
• Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):
  
  C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
  C:\Program Files\SaskTel\IP InSight

• Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE
  
  
• Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
