Here ya go Trevuren,

Thanks for keeping at this for me.
When I rebooted from safe mode, it appeared that my AVG was updating something. It still won't update from the taskbar or from its control center. Blah. ZoneAlarm is still zapped.
Here are the reports you wanted to see. Sorry I didn't think to clean cookies again before I went into safe mode:

Your log is clean and Ewido came out clean. As for AVG:

1. Unplug completely from the internet

2. Uninstall all of AVG

3. Reboot your machine

4. RE-install AVD

5. Plug back into the net

6. Update all definitions

Please advise on how it works nor.

Agh! This is so weird! I cannot uninstall the AVG. Here is the message I get:
Local machine: prepared for the installation
Installation:
Error: Uninstallation is not possible. Product not installed.
That's a joke, since it runs a virus scan every morning at 4 a.m. It is does a virus scan of incoming email. It's just the updates that won't work. Grrr.

Thanks!

Me, between a rock and a hard place. :tazz:

We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'
  • Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  • Click the Extended tab.
  • Scroll down until you find the service.
    ===>AVG7 Update Service
  • Click once on the service to highlight it.
  • Click Stop
  • Right-Click on the service.
  • Click on 'Properties'
  • Select the 'General' tab
  • Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  • From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  • Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'
The service is now stopped and disabled.

B. We will now delete the service:

1. Open HJT

2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service

3. Copy/Paste Avg7UpdSvc in the space provided and click OK

4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

5. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

6. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe

7. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

8. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Hi Trevuren,

I went through the stops posted. The disabling seemed to work fine in services.msc. The problem came when I tried to delete the service in Hijack This. It would not let me delete, saying it was a critical system or something like that. I tried a couple of times but it wouldn't work. The file we're trying to get rid of, evidently, is still on my system. Should I still try to delete it in safe mode?

Thanks once again.

Sorry for the lag Trevuren,

I stopped and disabled the Avg7Alrt in services.msc. The Hijack This again wouldn't let me delete the service, saying system-critical, cannot be deleted. I have not gone into safe mode to deleted the Grisoft file, but will do that ASAP when I get the okay from you. Thanks once again for all your help!

A. Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note:In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select
    • "Delete on Reboot".
    • "End Explorer Shell While Killing File"
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

    C:\Program Files\Dark Adapted

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

B. Now, go into Safe Mode and DELETE those AVG Files.

Regards,

Trevuren

HI Trevuren,

Before I do what you posted, I just want to say that I use that Dark Adapted program every minute I'm on the computer. My monitor is dying a slow death, and this program lets me adjust it brighter. Is there a problem with that file that I don't know of, or can I just skip that killbox step and continue to the safe mode and deleting the AVG files?

Thanks.

Skip it and go into Safe Mode. There is so little info available on that program that I was highly suspicious.

Hi Trevuren,

Here's the latest. I left the Dark Adapted alone. I went into safe mode, attempted to delete the Grisoft folder, and received an error message: "Cannot delete avges.dll. Access is denied. The source file may be in use." Since we stopped those couple of AVG things under services.msc, the AVG update error says, "cannot initialize the update interface. Installation of AVG Free Edition is probably damaged. Please reinstall AVG Free Edition.

I ran another Hijack This for the heck of it. (I'm working, so I had a few things open when I ran it - sorry!)
