I've picked up the msblank spy/virus and have run several programs but can't get rid of it. I've deleted the file from the system folder both throug HJT and manually, but it comes right back. I did manage to get my browser unlocked though. Now if I can get the msblank stuff out of the way.... Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks!!!

I'm running XP Home. Here's the Hijack This log:

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your reply! I got a some tips from your site about removing the blank virus/adware, and along with Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spy Subtract and a few other programs made a stab at getting the thing off my machine. I believe I have gotten most of it, however IE6 is now behaving somewhat strangly in that the Back button is non functional and grayed out after using Google or any other search engine. (The Back Button drop-down doesn't work either)

As a result, I down loaded Firefox, which is excellent and functions perfectly.

At any rate, here's the updated HJT file... I really don't know what to look for, so if you have a minute, please give it the once over.

This a great site! I really appreciate all of you that take the time to help others.

Thanks again,

Jim

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://forums.subrat...e=post&id=43811
http://swandog46.gee.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmapi.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmapi.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dmloader] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmloader.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MBv3ROjFX] mmsptnet.exe

Click FIX CHECKED. Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

Sam, I followed the instructions... 2 of the 3 files listed you had listed showed up and were deleted. Here's the logs for Fixwareout and HJT.

Thanks for your time and effort in helping me.

Download and save backlight to your desktop. Doubleclick blbeta.exe, accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click scan > next.

You'll see a list of all the items it found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (where xxxxxxx represents numbers). The application finds both bad files and legitimate ones such as "wbemtest.exe", so don't choose the rename option yet! Copy and paste the log it generated in your next reply.

Good, that's clean!

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmzup.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmzup.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{1A8013AC-A6E4-46C2-B071-A40EA010E2A4}: NameServer = 85.255.113.93,85.255.112.19

Now lets check some settings on your system.
  • Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
  • Then right click on your Default Connection
    • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
  • Left click on Properties
  • Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
  • Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

===========

Panda is not as bad as it looks. Most of what it found was in your system restore files, which we will flush out once you're clean. I'm more concerned with the startup entry that changes filename on every reboot.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmqpl.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmqpl.exe

Download the Pocket Killbox.

Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location and then double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:

    • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Favorites\AdultGambling.url
      C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\Application Data\tvmcwrd.dll
      C:\install.htm
      C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\valent.inf
      C:\WINDOWS\rdt.ini
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\csdyo.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\datastore.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\dgprpsetup.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\INNERADINSTALL.LOG
      C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmqpl.exe

  • Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
  • Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Your system will reboot now.

Please post a new hijackthis log.

Update: I'm not sure why Killbox didn't pick up the files you had listed, so I did a search and found that almost all of them were present, and I deleted them by hand. I also uninstalled Reglite, which I found was holding the applnit.dll file from a previous msblank infection. This deleted the file from the registry. At any rate, I think we're either there or almost there... IE is working again! (back button is functional).

Here's the most recent HJT log:

Your log is clean! :tazz:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Sam,

Thanks again for all your help. :) I'm picking up a hardware firewall tomorrow, and will be also adding the software you recommended.

This is the second time I've been hijacked. What a pain! :tazz: I can now see how vulnerable I am without protection!

Best wishes,

Jim
