I consider myself pretty well with keeping spyware away. I've run Spybot, Ad-Aware, and NAV and none of them have found anything. However, today, I had two random pop-ups while I was doing nothing, one linking to http://secwave.vo.llnwd.net, another to empnads.com, and last one to inqwire.com. The strange thing was, these only starting happening when I enabled the SDHelper in Spybot today. After I turned it off, I have yet to receive any more pop-ups from those three sites. Anyway, if someone could please help me identify any malicious entries from Hijackthis, it would be greatly appreciated.

My log:

Hi CirrusDX,

There's not much showing on your log..just a couple leftover entries, let's remove them.

Open HijackThis and click Scan. Put a check next to these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

What you're telling is really strange..Spybot's SdHelper feature is protective, not the other way around :tazz:

I would try uninstalling Spybot and reinstalling it..then again reenable SDHelper see if the same thing will happen again..but one other point is, even if Spybot is causing the popups to get through somehow, there must be an adware on your computer causing the popups. Let's do some investigation on that aspect..

Go here to make an online scan:

http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Then post that report along with a HijackThis startup list made in safe mode. For that reboot and start tapping the F8 key just before Windows starts to load. Select safe mode by using the arrow keys on your keyboard.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Click on the button "Generate StartupList log". Log will be saved in the same folder where HijackThis is.
  • Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post

I've run Ad-Aware SE Plus, Spybot, and Symantec Antivirus Corporate v10 which have found nothing. I ran Symantec's IEPlugin removal tool which deleted nothing of importance (like blank.gif files). IE seems less sluggish since Spyware Doctor. Do you think it removed it completely?

HijackThis log and Startup List look clean..

Spyware Doctor found a few files in the temp directory..

It would be a good idea to clean your temporary files..

Go to Start>Run and type: cleanmgr

With the DiskCleanup utility clean Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin.

The registry entries it found with the CLSIDs are bad, but without a file they are just orphaned entries..

Now when it comes to SWF Studio, I don't know why it would flag that, a search revealed that it is a valid Flash extension program..I would think it could be a false positive..

Cookies are unimportant, and nothing else shows up..

I see that you have reenabled SDHelper..did you get any popups after that again?

I've done the Disk Cleanup utility. Nothing's come up since that last incident. I thought I would turn on SDHelper just in case. I just notice that my IE works a lot faster without SDHelper on, but other than that, no other pop-ups.

I was almost convinced that secwave, empnads, and rotator.adjuggler would HAVE to be on my computer in order to get those pop-up ads. But I haven't found anything, and it hasn't come back since.

It's weird that I'd get IEPlugin and Overpro.com to come up because Ad-Aware or Spybot has NEVER detected those before. So I don't get how they could be orphaned if I've never had them. Of course, they could be false positives.

Yes they could be false positives..

Another alternative to Sdhelper is Spywareblaster. It is a nice program which runs in the background all the time seperately, not as a BHO..you could disable Sdhelper and download that instead, I don't think it would affect browser speed since it's not a BHO. You can get it here:

Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
