Hi,
Like many others (it seems) my PC has caught Trojan.Vundo. My Norton Internet Security tells me this. This is the 2005 version and I run Live Update so its definitions should be up to date. I also use Adaware Personal. This does not detect the infection. Norton indicates that the Object Name is C:\WINDOWS\system32\geebb.dll. I have tried to remove the the Trojan with Norton's removal tool but it says that Vundo is not present on the computer. I have followed the instructions carefully with windows running in both ordinary and safe mode with system restore turned off.
I have dowwnloaded Hijackthis and unzipped it to my folder in Docments and settings and then run it.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key (or F5 in some machines) until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\bbeeg.*

* The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
* In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Hi greyknight17,
I'm sorry but I goofed. I typed C:\WINDOWS\system32\bbeeg.dll* at the second line in KillVundo.
The dll file has gone from the system32 folder and Norton no longer says that I have an infection but the Hijackthis log file shows that geebb is still in my system.

* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat

* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\bbeeg.*

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click 'Options...'
Move the arrow down to 'Custom CleanUp!'
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run an online virus scan at ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Make sure this folder is deleted by now -> C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bbeeg.*

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

Restart and run a new Panda scan and post that log here along with a new HijackThis log.

I do not understand your last post. Let me try to elabourate on my failed attempt. I basicaly understood your first post but at 1am in the morning was not suficiently awake to carry them out. I removed Spyware Cleaner. There was no folder remaining in program files. I then proceeded with your instructions to this point:-

Because I inadvertantly typed C:\WINDOWS\system32\bbeeg.dll* at the second command line I recieved an error saying something to the effect that the command was invalid. The program then told me to enter "enter to stop".

As I said above the offending geebb.dll file was removed from the system32 folder.

Having realised my error I tried to re-do the process. However, having removed the geebb.dll file, this time I got a message that said something to the effect that the file was not present and the program terminated.

So I have not been able to proceed beyond this point.

Before you spend a load more time working on this can I make a suggestion/ask a question? Is there any point in creating a file in the system32 folder called geebb.dll and starting at the beginning of your original instructions again?

If the answer is yes hopefuly I can manage that. If the answer is no then I will buy myself a new hard disk (I need a larger one anyway) and copy my work files on to it and then re-format the existing one so I can use it as a spare.

No need to create that fake dll file in the system32 folder. Just follow the instruction I gave you previously on Post #4 above.

No need to format at all. Vundo is not very hard to remove and usually will be removable after one or two tries.

Better luck this time. I have managed to carry out the instructions in you post #4. Panda did not produce a log but did say that nothing was detected (see atachment). The Norton message that you can see has only started to appear tonight. You can click OK and it will go away but it re-appears a few seconds later. I have run HiJackThis again and the log is below.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingc...howtutorial=61).

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner.
* Click on 'Complete System Scan' and the scan will begin.
* While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose 'Remove', then put a check next to 'Perform action on all infections' in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named 'Save report'.
* Click 'Save report'.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Restart your computer. Post the logs for HijackThis and Ewido.

Thank you very much for all your patience, time and effort on my behalf.
I Have read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and will do as it suggests. Everthing seems OK now. If nothing un-toward happens is now the right time to turn "System Restore" back on and if I start using SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard should I stop using Ad-Aware?

You mean to say that you left system restore turned off during this whole time? Not good...if something were to go wrong and crashed Windows, you might have run into major problems trying to recover it. But yes, enable it now so you don't forget.

No, keep all those antispyware programs. They have their own purpose. SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are just there to give you more protection (they're for protection/prevention and NOT for detection and removal).
