Hey, I've had the Ad Yieldmanager pop-ups for a while now, and tried about ten different programs to try and solve the problem, to no avail. I came across another post on this forum that seemed to help the guy, and I didn't realise how serious it could be, idiocy on my behalf. I downloaded Hijack This though, and here's my log. Hope someone can help.

Hello MarchHair and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep. Please be aware of this site: http://www.spywarewa...re.htm#xos_note and what they say about XoftSpy.

You appear not to have any form of antivirus protection, we must correct that immediately.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION
CCleaner

Install AVG and scan the whole of your PC before continuing with the rest of the fix.

Copy everything inside the quote box below (starting with dir) and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as findfile.bat on your Desktop.

dir G:\WINDOWS\system32\??ool32.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate findfile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the contents of that Notepad here along with a new HiJackThis log.

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.
Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

G:\Program Files\lrbe\

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch datafound under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.(3 logs required)

Thanks for this help! Yeah, I have XoftSpy, is that not helping the problem? I've carried out the steps you suggested!

findfile.bat

Volume in drive G is new 60 gb drive
Volume Serial Number is DCA9-60E2

Directory of G:\WINDOWS\system32

05/10/2005 19:18 401,408 ??ool32.exe
1 File(s) 401,408 bytes

Directory of G:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop

Then I get to re-starting in Safe Mode and it comes up multi(0)disk® system32/drivers, and a whole list of similar, and doesn't move on from it. I've looked around on the page you suggested, maybe you could suggest something?

~Kyle

PS - I'm the administrator of my computer, no other users. :tazz:

Hello again Kyle

It looks as though you have a problem with the OS. I will try a workround without using safe mode. If I am reading correctly, you did the findfile and installed AVG, but got stuck from Ewido onwards. I'll pick up the fix from there.

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.

  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

I think that now is a good time to run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.(3 logs required)

Carried out the steps as best I could, hijack files are in chronological order. (Edit - Actually, it won't let me load the hijack1 file, and I don't know why.) I hope I'm getting somewhere.

Hello again Kyle

It is looking a lot better.

Do you recall that in the first fix I asked you to find a file with question markes in it? Well I want you to find that file and delete it. Now here is the problem; a ? in computer language is a wildcard i.e. it can be any alpha character. So if I search for that file in windows XP, I am likely to find an important file SPOOL32.exe.

Now you have to turn detective and find the bad one which is here: G:\WINDOWS\system32 and is 392KB and created on 05/10/2005

Do not delete anything other than that file with the same size and date.

Please post the result with a (final?) HJT log. How is it running?

Now here is the problem; a ? in computer language is a wildcard i.e. it can be any alpha character. So if I search for that file in windows XP, I am likely to find an important file SPOOL32.exe.

Now you have to turn detective and find the bad one which is here: G:\WINDOWS\system32 and is 392KB and created on 05/10/2005

Do not delete anything other than that file with the same size and date.

There's only SPOOL32.exe present with that exact date, size, and time of creation. Any ideas?

Hello again Kyle

Don't delete it. I was hoping that you would see more than one by usng the search facility.

Please visit Kaspersky for a file scan. Choose browse and navigate to the file, then choose submit and wait for the reply from Kaspersky. Please let me know the outcome.

It is strange that the original scan only showed one file fitting the description, although I don't have spool32.exe on my PC so there is a good chance that the one you have is a trojan.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus has not detected any viruses at this time in the file you submitted.

Apparently it's not infected, and I still seem to be getting the pop-ups as much as ever. Hmmm. :tazz:

Nil desperandum!

Let's try this scan; it goes very deep.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

We are definitely going to need safe mode (I had forgotten - sorry). This probably what is wrong according to Microsoft.

Two options: During a boot, tap the F8 key or go to Start/Run/Msconfig/Boot.ini and check off /SafeBoot/Apply, reboot

I'll put the secod option into better English for you, you have to type in msconfig and then hit enter, then you go to the boot.ini tab. If successful, run the scan.

Okie, carried out as you said, and here's the WinPFind file.

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

I have edited your post to show the log in the thread since many people view these to learn. Also it is easier for me to checkout suspicious entries.

Just two files to be seen; one we knew of before.

Download
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

G:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\oins.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

And we should try this also:

Download
AIMFix

Please double-click the AIMFix.exe file to start the process. Please wait while the programme scans your PC for AIM associated malware. When complete a list will appear, a log will be saved and Finished will appear. Please include that log in your reply.

One more thing to try is this:

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
Aproposfix

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.
