About a month ago I lost run32dll, error messages every time I went to ctrl panel, and numerous other links failed to function. I downloaded dll files and tried to install. Now I get a window with 'run32dll exe' but it wont allow me access.
Should I delete all run32dll on my computer and then get (where?) a more user friendly version of Run32dll? Any advice would be appreciated Tx.

Sounds like a common problem caused by a malware infection. Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log as a new topic in the Hijack This forum. It will get a better response there from the people most qualified to analyze logs.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide. Also see this post.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Checked both files you highlighted with Kapersky and got no report, either good or bad.

That's unusual. Make sure you're including the full path. Let's try this one:

Hi again,
Done what you suggested: used 'virustotal' & checked the following, all OK. The site would not accept 'cryptwin.exe' as it was 'more than 2MB'.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CRYPT32.DLL )
\CRYPTDLG.DLL )
\CRYPTEXT.DLL )
\CRYPTNET.DLL ) NO VIRUS FOUND
\CRYPTUI.DLL )
\SPOOL32.EXE )
\SPOOLSS.DLL )
Tried to locate
C:\WINDOWS\spooldataexpoler.exe
\spooldataexplorer.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\spooldataexpoler.exe
\spooldataexplorer.exe
Got the message 'file path not found'.

Most grateful, where next? L D NEIL

Be sure you're able to view hidden and system files, and please send me the following files (if found), preferably zipped:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\cryptwin.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\spooldataexpoler.exe

admin.geekstgo AT gmail.com (replace AT with @)

I'm pretty sure these files are malicious, but would like to identify them before removing.

Hi, looked for and failed to find either of the 2 files
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\cryptwin.exe or \spooldataexpoler.exe
Did find one called 'WINSPOOL.DRV'
Used windows explorer, had 'show all files' enabled and went rabbiting in sub folders but no sign.
I note that 'cryptwin' showed up in first pass of 'hijack this' but not in second,
'spooldataexpoler.exe' showed up in both HJT passes.
Any further suggestions would be appreciated, but I don't want to consume too much of your time.
Thanks, Lindsay Neil

Hey Lindsay. You're not bothering us.

Did you do this? (see bold)

* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
>> * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
* Click Start, Programs and Accessories and open Windows Explorer.
* Select a hard drive from the left hand side of the Windows Explorer window.
* Select View the Entire contents of this drive.

I think I may have found something, but I'm going to pass it by admin. first.

Hello again,
I have done as you suggested and looked at all the system files, including hidden ones. No sign of 'cryptwin.exe' or 'spooldataexpoler.exe'. Apart from 'crypt' files previously mentioned, under those sesembling spooldataexpoler, I could only find 'SPOOL32.EXE' and 'SPOOLSSDLL'. If this is malware, he/she is exceeding good at the mal part! Maybe this is 'chameleonware'. How cunning!
Thanks, Lindsay Neil

Click Here to download TheKillbox. Extract TheKillBox.exe from the zip file and double click it to open it up. In the 'Enter Full Path and Filename to Delete' box, copy and paste these entries one by one, clicking 'Find and Kill This File' after each one:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\cryptwin.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\spooldataexpoler.exe

Click 'Exit' when done.

Note: If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run: http://www.javacools...ngfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log when finished. :tazz:

Hi again,
Downloaded Killbox, on using, got report 'files seem to be missing for each one.
Downloaded the missing files prog. and re-ran Killbox - again the files were not found. Ran 'hijack this' and saw that the file 'spooldataexpoler.exe %srun%' was still showing up and in sheer frustration, hit the box to zap it. It is not there any more on running 'hijack this'. 'Cryptwin.exe' never showed up at all. I hope I haven't screwed up!
Control panel and other links still non-functional - get instead the 'run32dll readme' and 'run32dll.exe' but not allowed access. Will attach the latest hijack this log. Thanks a lot. Lindsay NeilLogfile of HijackThis v1.99.0

Hi,
Looked for the file you identified but could not find it anywhere. Uninstalled 'realplayer', but I see from running 'Hijack This' that the file dtill comes up. The uninstall did not remove the real player elements from the start menu and I have left those meantime. The content has gone (BU on to CD though)
Where might I try from here. I really appreciate your help and attention and I am learning things ++ from our correspondence! Here is Hijack this...
