I run Microsoft Antispyware completey updated. I also run Computer Associates EZ Trust Antivirus, with updated virus files. My daughter clicked on something she shouldn' have... Your help is appreciated.

My EZ Antivirus from CA is giving me the following message...

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Temporary Folder; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Install Ewido Security Suite.

• Install Ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.

• The programme will now open to the main screen.
• When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.

Now that the updates have been installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lockx.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look. (2 logs)

Thanks for your reply and all that useful information. I am still at work and will get back to my home computer and do the things you suggest tonight. I thought I would respond and let you know that I have four users set up on that computer. Three of which are active. I am the administrator.

I have done my best... I hope I have gotten everything. I had some trouble with the ewido scan. I mistakenly clicked "Perform action on all infections" then realized it and stopped the scan. It had found 20.000 infected files in a program directory called arksoft (I think). I then restarted the scan and cleaned the rest one by one. When I saved the first scan, it was named... then when I saved the second one, it save it by the same name and overwrote the old one. so I only have the second scan here.

Again, I am the administrator, and I have three other users.. and a guest account.. two of the guests are active on this computer.

First one is the lates HiJackThis log... then the saved ewido scan after that.

Hello again Dave

That looks a lot better. Please submit a HJT log from each of the profiles (You'll have to log on as the user and then produce the log). Just paste them into your reply one after the other. Give each one a name or number to stop confusion. Also, your last HJT log was scattered which makes reading them difficult (they're already difficult enough ) - normally this is caused by having word wrap enabled in notepad. Please just check that the logs you post are not scattered by using PREVIEW POST before clicking ADD REPLY.

Now, to follow is each user's logfile. But first I want to tell you of HiJackThis error messages I received on the third and forth users but not on first or second. The first error instructed me that it could not write to the log file and said to ...

Go to : Start : Run : notepad"C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts"
Then find the HiJackThis Reports... delete them and save as "hosts" with qotations.

I did not do this.

Please ensure that Microsoft Antispyware is disabled from running in real-time throughout the period of the fixes, for all users.

User 1 Fix

Please set your system to show all files;
please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [strtas] lockx.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file, and delete it:

lockx.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot logging on as User 2

User 2 Fix

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen).

Please set your system to show all files;
please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

This user did not show up on the user list in safe mode. I was not able to verify that lockx.exe was deleted for this user although I do not see it in the log.

Hello again Dave

All four logs are clean, however the log for User 3 appears to have been created in safe mode. Could I please see a fresh log for User 3 from normal mode?

Also, you mention an overnight scan finding a worm; what worm? what sort of scan - antivirus? If so, where was it? It might be reporting something off the system for example a quarantine folder or restore point.

Phil,
Here's the user 3 log, not in safe mode. After that is the worm and Cussifide Trojan information from the full log of my latest antivirus scan done right before posting here. Note that the trojan that it lists as not being cleaned/deleted/renamed... is the very one I started this thread with. The worm is in the middle of the antivirus log.. (I will put an astirisk by it). This worm was deleted in the wee hours of the morning when I did the previous scan. Then after all the restarts while deleting the lockx.exe files etc... it shows up again here in this latest scan. It apprears it gets reinstalled.. ??? as does the trojan???.

Hello Dave

Could you navigate to C:\WINDOWS\bundles\

and list all the files in that folder? It's not a name I am familiar with and I wouldn't mind betting that the whole folder is undesirable, in which case we can dispose of all the contents rather than just picking off a file. There may be some subfolders present too, in which case just report like this:

C:\WINDOWS\bundles\bad.exe
C:\WINDOWS\bundles\badfolder\bad.dll

The SSK refers to surfsidekick which is not normally a problem. In fact you may find it in the list of installed programmes in ADD & REMOVE in the control panel.

I take it that there are a few too many for you to type out?

Try a screen print! Go to the folder and explode it as much as you need to so that as much as possible is shown on screen. Then whilst depressing the ALT key, click PRINTSCRN. Go to START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>PAINT>EDIT>PASTE>FILE>SAVE AS type in badfolder and below select JPG file extension >SAVE.

In your reply click Browse and navigate to the saved file badfolder.jpg then click Add This Attachment

That should save your pinkies Please note that some of the spelling was chosen by Bill Gates and not myself.

Something else you may like to try is this:

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:AproposFix
Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.
