Hi,

I seem to have some kind of "PS Guard" virus attacking my computer. I used spware removal and adware removal software to get rid of the "intmon" part of the virus, but now this PS Guard is annoying me. I have the hijack this log posted below. I tried using Ewido security program to get rid of the virus, but it didn't work. I also tried deleting PS Guard in safe mode. Please, explain how I can get rid of this virus. Also, is it safe to use the internet while this virus is still on my computer? (If it helps to know I have a hewlett Packard (HP) computer.)

hi,

This is the hijackthis log. Before you replied I tried to delete the ps vrius from the hijackthis log. Sorry I guess I wasn't suppose to do this. I installed windows service pack like you told me and i put hijackthis into its own folder. The new hijackthis log is below. Adware scans still show that I am infected with ps guard virus. Hopefully you can tell me what to do now.

  • Then click Run>Start and a Smitrem folder will apear on your desktop also.
• REBOOT your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
• Open the smitRem folder
  • Double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
  • Follow the prompts on screen.
  • Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
  • It will produce a log called smitfiles.txt log
• REBOOT your system into Normal Mode
  
  
• Post the contents of the smitfiles.txt log into this thread.

That should have taken care of the PSGuard problem. They were orphaned registry entries that were setting off alarms.

1. Please update Ewido to its latest definitions.

2. Reboot into Safe Mode

3. Run Ewido in Safe Mode

4. Reboot back into Normal Mode

Hi,

Sorry my reponse is a little late. Hopefully someone is still looking to help me. I deleted the 'need2find' in the hijack this log, but since then my computer seems to have been re-infected with the PS guard or some variant. The log below, however, was taken before I deleted it. My computer screen is all white or gray and my browser is hijacked. Here is the hijack this log. If you need another one with the 'need2find' deletion I can post that also.

• First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
  
  • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
  • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
  • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
  • Close the window with ok
• Please RUN HijackThis.
  . Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  
  
• Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

• Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
  
  
• Reboot Your System in Safe Mode
  
  How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode
  
  
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
• Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):
  
  C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchop.exe
  shdochop.dll<==Do a Search for this one.
  
  
• Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Please print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

• Prepare CWShredder for use:
  • Download CWShredder.
  • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
  • Please do not do anything with it yet.
• Prepare AboutBuster for use:
  • Download AboutBuster.
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
  • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.

• Run CWShredder:
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
• Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
  • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the directions Read: Important! prompt.
  • Click "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click "Yes" at the About:Buster prompt to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • Please wait while AboutBuster scans your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click "Save Log...". Make sure you save it as I will need a copy of it.
  • Click "Exit" and "Exit" again to exit AboutBuster.
• Clean out temporary files:
  • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click "OK" to remove them.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
• Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
• Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
  • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
  • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
  • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
  • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
  • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
  • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
  • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
  • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
  • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
  • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
  • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
• Prepare your reply:
  • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
  • Please post the AboutBuster log.
  • Please note any complications you had.

Hi,

I did what you instructed. The about buster program did not find any malware programs running in safe mode. When I rebooted into normal mode and ran trendmicro housecall the scan removed 7 out of 8 malware programs found. However, it said that C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchop.exe was undeletable. Thus, when I ran hijack this at the end; the malware program seemed to be still running. The aboutbuster log is posted below with the hijack this log file. I hope I there is something else I can do to get rid of the malware.
