Hello

My emergency is that I have no desktop! When I start my computer, everything runs normally until the Windows XP welcome screen shows up. After that, all I see is my wallpaper with my cursor. That's all. There are no desktop icons or start menu, there's also no system clock at the bottom right hand corner and there is no taskbar!

Please help me because I cannot do anything on my computer.

Thank you.

Hi mike_jones!

Try hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the TASK MANAGER. Once it appears, click on FILE and then NEW TASK and type in: explorer.exe

Hello

When I try doing that, I get a pop-up saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Can you get ot the desktop in SAFE MODE? To get to SAFE MODE reboot your computer, once it starts rebooting, hit F8 about once a second until a menu appears giving you the option to boot into SAFE MODE.

Let me know if you can see the desktop in safe mode.

That is a GOOD sign. :tazz:

What I would like you to do is reboot your computer, and this time choose SAFE MODE W/ NETWORKING (Remember to hit F8 once a second). Once you are there, post back and I will tell you the next step.

Okay, please download HiJackThis from HERE. Unzip it to a folder on your computer. Once you have it unzipped, run it and click DO A SYSTEM SCAN ONLY. After the scan is complete, copy and paste everything that shows in a post in this topic (Or just click the SAVE LOG button and attach the file to a post here).

I've noticed that you haven't run any WINDOWS UPDATES on this computer, which is not good. Without the patches, at least SP1a, you are wide open for infection. What you will need to do is get your XP CD back from your cousin so that you can run some diagnostic scans of your operating system's files. Until then unfortunately there isn't much that we can do. :tazz:

Unfortunately you can't run windows update from safe mode. :tazz: And for the check of your operating systems files you will need the XP CD to do it.
