my norton 2005 internet security detected the trojan.vundo virus (c:\windows\msagent\chars\accabr.dll) on my computer. i am pretty computer stupid (altho i follow directions very well). i have noticed that several people have tried to download the removal tool that symantec offers, but have had no luck deleting the virus from their computers. that's what brings me here. i noticed the "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Required steps before posting your log." should i just go ahead and perform all these steps even tho the virus has already been identified? i would be so grateful for any help. thanks a lot!!!!!!

Yes, please read through that topic and run those scans. Restart and post the HijackTHis log here when you ran all those scans.

hello greyknight!! thanks for replying so quickly. i just finished the first 4 steps of "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Required steps before posting your log." unfortunately after rebooting, the virus was still there. here is my hijackthis log. again, i wanna thank you so very much for taking time out to help me!!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Uninstall Viewpoint via the Add/Remove panel. Delete this if found:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\

Please download VundoFix.exe at http://www.atribune....ds/VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key (or F5 in some machines) until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\msagent\CHARS\rbacca.*

* The fix will run then HijackThis will open.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).

Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run an online virus scan at ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

i'm having a problem. i downloaded the vundofix.exe and then rebooted my computer in safe mode. when prompted, i logged on under my name (1 other person shares this computer with me) and i got a black screen with 4 "Safe mode" in the four corners. i stared at this screen for about 10 minutes (nothing happened). i then turned the computer off and rebooted in safe mode again. this time i logged in under "administrator." it's been about 15 mintes and i'm once again staring at a black screen with "safe mode" in all 4 corners. across the very top of the screen is written "Microsoft ® Windows XP ® (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519:Service Pack 2" question: should i disconnect my dsl line from the compter first??

No need to disconnect dsl line. Hit ctrl+alt+del and see if the Task Manager comes up. If so, go to File->New Task and type in explorer.exe and hit OK.

If that didn't work, then try booting to Safe Mode with Networking or Safe Mode with Command Prompt instead.

thanks for the help!!!! for some reason when i got home and booted in safe mode, the black screen was no longer there so i was able to complete the steps (yippeee!!) :tazz:

when i went to check the suggested items in hijackthis, 5 of them were no longer on the list--i checked only what was still there.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

dude, thank you so very much for helping me!!!! everything is working just fine now. i downloaded hosts, and spywareguard and spywareblaster, so hopefully i wont be having this problem again. and if i do, i'll be sure to come back to this site for your help! for all your troubles, i made a couple of donations. thanks again!! :tazz:
