Hello Amy and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Also please disable Ewido Guard from running during the fix for the same reason. Open Ewido and deselect the Guard option.

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those two programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

You appear to not have any antivirus protection on your PC. We must remedy that immediately.

Download
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION

Install AVG and scan all files on your PC.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and double-click on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

    VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:
    http://www.atribune.org/forums
    http://www.247fixes.com/forums
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum
    http://forums.net-integration.net

  • At this point press Enter once.
  • Next you will see:

Type in the file path as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\fcyax.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second file path as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\System32\xaycf.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED: R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\WinIogon.exe
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\fcyax.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AntiV] C:\WINDOWS\AntiV32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*AntiV] C:\WINDOWS\AntiV32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AntiV] C:\WINDOWS\AntiV32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [*AntiV] C:\WINDOWS\AntiV32.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: fcyax - C:\WINDOWS\System32\fcyax.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close HiJackThis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

HI....I did everything yhou told me to do except for a few things.

First, I couldnt get it in safe mode because everytime i re-started my computer and pressed F8 it would just shut down, without giving me any options.

Second, I clicked on the KillVundo.bat and entered the first path (C:\WINDOWS\system32\fcyax.dll ) and after i did that it said "path was valid" it never said to enter a second path??

Sooooo I did the hijackthis log again and checked off all the things it said to check off (a few were missing though??)

I did the CLeanup thing....it said that it was succesfull.

I did the Active Scan and it was succesfull, too. However, it didnt give me any results to post in the form of the hijackthis log.

Heres the info you wanted me to post..........

Active Scan.....

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

Happy safe surfing Amy!

Hello again Amy or Andrea

This looks like another PC and not the one I helped with yesterday. How many sick PC's have you got?

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Temporary Folder; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
Hoster

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

WinTools for IE service (WinToolsSvc)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

WinToolsSvc

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.
Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

MyWebSearch
WinTools

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete these folders (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\
C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\PROGRA~1\SYSTEM~1\soap.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\Andrea\LOCALS~1\Temp\drv6.tmp.dll

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look. (2 logs please)

Hello again Amy

Certainly was a large Ewido file. Incidentally, I noticed two profiles (Andrea and Peter, and as stated at the very outset, multiple identity PC's present different problems) on this PC. I will deal with Andrea's profile and then Peter's.

One question I have, do you know what this is: O20 - Winlogon Notify: GuardianQELFA - C:\WINDOWS\

It means absolutely nothing to me, but it is located in an area of the registry known for problems. If you do not know what it is either, please proceed with this scan.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Also, please include a HJT log created from the Peter logon and marked as such to avoid confusion.

The VX2 infection on your PC is confirmed.

Close any programmes you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Extra note... after reboot and logging in, normally a screen will pop up and perform the rest of the fix and notepad opens automatically afterwards.
If that doesn't happen, you'll have to do it manually, so open your L2M-folder which is present on your desktop and doubleclick second.bat.
Let it run and notepad (log.txt) will open then. Copy and paste the contents of it in your next reply with a new hijackthislog.

Hello again

Nearly there now! When I say clean, I am stating that the HJT log is clean. That is not the same as the system being virii free, sometimes there are things lurking that I can't see, but if the pop-ups, pop-unders, redirects and usual malware behaviour is gone, then there's more than a fighting chance of you being 100% clean.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CWShredder
cwsserviceemove.reg file

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://in.webcounter.cc/--/?cxlow (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://in.webcounter.cc/--/?cxlow (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://in.webcounter.cc/-/?cxlow (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://in.webcounter.cc/--/?cxlow (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.websearch...spx?tb_id=50188
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://opti.riviera.cc (obfuscated)
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.ivolti.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://opti.riviera.cc (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://in.webcounter.cc/--/?cxlow (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = http://riviera.cc (obfuscated)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsear...html?p=ZRxdm185
O8 - Extra context menu item: Ebates - file://C:\Program Files\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker\System\Temp\ebates_script0.htm
O9 - Extra button: Ebates - {7F241C00-DAB6-11d5-AAA8-0001028DF1BC} - file://C:\Program Files\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker\System\Temp\ebates_script0.htm (file missing) (HKCU)
O19 - User stylesheet: C:\WINDOWS\Web\tips.ini (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Unzip cwsserviceemove.reg file to your desktop. While in safe mode, double click on it and grant it permission to add the registry items.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log for Peter’s profile (from normal mode) and I will take another look.
