oh man, i've got it too. same problems really... norton detects the virus but can't delete, quarantine or repair it and the removal tool doesn't repair it. if you think i could follow someone else's post, feel free to direct me to that - i'm a total novice at this so any exact instructions like Start>Control Panel> yada yada would be appreciated

thanks so much for your help - i have a little hang up... i have the same problem as someone else you are helping, i can't get into safe mode. i have gotten into it a few days ago with much turning on.off of the computer - now it seems to be permanent. I get the screen where i can click on the user... then it turns black, a window pops up and disappears so fast you can't read it (says something like do you want to continue working in safe mode), occasionally i see the desktop briefly but then the screen turns black with "safe mode" in each lower corner.
i'm gonna try again and check back to see if you have any ideas...thanks again, this website is awesome.

Hi Alison, how about if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking or Safe Mode with Command Prompt? Will those work?

ok, was able to boot in safe mode using the networking one i think....once i got to hijack this i clicked "scan and save log file" or something to that effect. i couldn't find the R1 one you told me to fix, there weren't any R3's. at that point i minimized the screen to look in the notepad (which i had also earlier minimized) and i was left with a blank screen that i couldn't pull anything back up from. then i rebooted to fill you in on what happened.

No need to click on "scan and save log file" whenever you are doing the fix. I don't need the log there...I just want you to run a scan and start fixing them. Only click scan and save log file after you are done with everything and restarted back to Normal Mode (which is where I want the new log scanned - not in Safe Mode).

Yes, your screen will be blank. You have to follow through the instructions and close HijackThis and it should reboot. If anything is not found, just go on to the next one and see if it exists.

Well, give me what you have so far. We will continue from there.

ok here it is my new log - just to recap, all i've done so far is gone into safe mode, done the file path stuff, didn't "fix" anything on hijack this, rebooted and ran a scan to post here to you. incidently, norton has stopped detecting the virus after doing that.

ok thanks for your patience.

i ran clean up and the only hitch was that i did accidentally start the clean up with a few extra boxes checked in the custom scan section - i stopped the scan ASAP with 5.9 MB cleared... do you think that will cause me any problems? then i proceed with another "as directed" clean up.

i ran an Active Scan and the results were clean - there was no log created that i could see. the scan took a couple of hours... not sure if that is normal or not. let me know if you need me to try it again.

Although i'm certain that this isnt what you were looking for, here were my Panda results.

Hi Alison, that should be ok if you have no problems. The only reason we ask users to only check some of those boxes now is that because some users had problems with it (it deleted a file that changed their Windows XP style/theme to the old classic 98 style).

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
