Trojan.Vundo ddaya.dll that won't go away [RESOLVED]

I can't seem to stop the process that is holding onto the ddaa.dll file.

Attached is my HiJack this log.

I already tried to go into safe mode and use killvundo.bat as follows:

But that didn't stop the processes that are holding the file and I could not delete the O2 or O20 files when I went back into HijackThis.

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :tazz:

Before we can get started on fixing your problem you must change the location of Hijackthis. It should not run directly from your desktop or a temp directory. Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

Once you have Hijackthis running from a permanent folder, please reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
    By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

    Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll

  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

    Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ayadd.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open. If it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:


    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddaya - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

I did all of the things that you said.

One thing that I noticed when I ran the VundoFix was the following message:
"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process .. "

Well that didn't work, so let's try another method.

But first let's get rid of a few things that Panda found. Please delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\HDPlugin1015.dll
C:\WINDOWS\iconz.exe
C:\WINDOWS\woinstall.exe




Please follow these directions.
Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.
  • Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
  • Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe
    • In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.
    • Once you see this screen click on each instance of ddaya.dll once and then click the kill button.
    • After you have killed all of the ddaya.dll's under winlogon click OK.
    • If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well
    • Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of ddaya.dll then click the kill button.
    • If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well
    • Once you have done that click OK again.
  • Run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.


    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddaya - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll


    Now click Fix Checked and close HijackThis.


  • Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved on your desktop earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.


  • Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.
    • Enter the following filepath and filename into the Full path of file to delete box

      C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll
    • Click the red circle with the white x and say yes to the delete prompt but no to reboot now
    • Repeat with any of the reverse named .bak or .ini files
    • After you have input the last file name then reboot

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

I followed all of the instructions but the file is still there.

Here are a few things that I noticed:
One of the files that were found by Panda was not there. Specifically, the file C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\HDPlugin1015.dll was not there. I deleted the other two files.

When using procexp.exe, there were no instances of ddaya.dll on the Threads tab when I double-clicked on winlogon.exe. The name of the files/processes were all "!CreateThread+0x27" with one instance of a file named 0X103d353

There were a few instances of ddaya.dll in the threads tab when I double-clicked on explorer.exe

I didn't see any .ini or .bak files or files with reverse names in either location.

Please disable Norton's ScriptBlocking. It may be interferring with the fix.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
    By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

    Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll

  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

    Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ayadd.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open. If it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:


    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

I stopped the Norton script blocking like you suggested.

Looks like the same results as before after I did everthing you suggested again.

There are multiple users on this computer. Is it necessary to remove other users and the somehow bypass the initial user log-on menu?

The fix should work no matter how many users you have as long as you are logging in as administrator when you get into Safe mode.

I'm convinced that the problem lies with Norton.

Print out these directions and then reboot into Safe mode.
Once in Safe mode click Start -> Run -> services.msc
Double click on Symantec Event Manager and click Stop.

Do the same thing with these services.

Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Service
Norton AntiVirus Firewall Monitor Service
SAVScan - Symantec Corporation
ScriptBlocking Service

Now perform just the VundoFix portion of the fix. There's no need for you to run CleanUp or Panda again at this point.

Reboot back to normal mode and post new logs.

You could be right about the Norton/Symantec thing, but none of the services were started when I booted in safe mode so I couldn't stop any of them. I then verified that they are started when I boot in normal mode. I'm very familiar with the starting and stopping services. I booted back in safe mode and tried stopping every service that the system would allow me to stop (there were only a few required services left running) and I ran the VundoFix program. It still had the message that the file could not be deleted because it was being used.

Ok, let's go to plan C. :tazz:

Download and install Advanced Process Manipulation Here



Then copy the text below into notepad and save it directly to the rootdirectory as vundoh.reg
Set Filetype to "All files" (the file should now be here: C:\vundoh.reg)

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSEvents.MSEvents]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]


Open Process Explorer, which you downloaded a few days ago.
  • Scroll down in the main window and find winlogon.exe
  • Right click on winlogon.exe and select Suspend
  • Leave Process Explorer open.
Now run HijackThis and put checkmarks in front of these two lines


O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddaya - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll

Do NOT fix them yet

Now open Advanced Process Manipulation.
  • Scroll down in the main window and find c:\windows\explorer.exe
  • Click on the entry and that will display a list of files in the second window.
  • Scroll down the list in the second window and find C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll
  • Right click on that entry and select Unload DLL
  • You will now lose your Start Bar and Desktop Icons. This is normal.
  • Leave Advanced Process Manipulation open
Go back to Process Explorer window.
  • Click File > Run
  • In the run box type regedit.exe /s C:\vundoh.reg
Back in Advanced Process Manipulation.
  • Scroll down in the main window and find c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe
  • Click on the entry and that will display a list of files in the second window.
  • Scroll down the list in the second window and find C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.dll
  • Right click on that entry and select Unload DLL
  • You will have to click OK about six times
In HijackThis click Fix checked. You will be prompted you are about to remove a BHO. That's what you want.

Now back in Process Explorer.
  • Find winlogon.exe again.
  • Right click on winlogon.exe and select Resume
  • This should reboot your computer automatically.

Reboot back into Safe Mode


Run Killbox and paste the first file listed below into the full pathname and file to delete box.

The file name will appear in the window and if the file exists it will appear in blue under that window then select standard file kill, press the red X button, say yes to the prompt and once the file deleted message comes up then repeat for each file in turn

[Note: Killbox makes backups of all deleted files in a folder called C:\!submit ] If Killbox tells you any files are missing don't worry

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddaya.tmp

Then on killbox top bar press tools/delete temp files and follow those prompts and say yes to everything.


Reboot once more and post a new hijackthis log.
