Hi, you guys are awesome. I saw someone else's thread about this worm and followed the directions y'all provided, but apparently I've got a slightly different variant b/c my task manager still won't come up and I've apparently still got issues....

Here was my HijackThis logfile:

Hi oldarmy94,

I think you still have one (new) strain of the Alcran worm on your computer.

Could you surf to:
http://www.thespykil...x.php?topic=5.0
and upload:
C:\Program Files\MsMovies\MsMovies.exe

Only AFTER doing so please download and unzip BFUzip from http://computercops..../Merijn/bfu.zip
Run the program and click the Web button as shown here:
Posted Image

Use this URL to copy into the address bar of the Download script window:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/p2pnetwork.bfu

Execute the script by clicking the Execute button.
Note that you should see a progress bar while the script is being executed.

If you have any questions about the use of BFU please read here:
http://metallica.gee...structions.html

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log.

Regards,

Looks like that fixed the task manager and regedit issues, as I can bring those up now with no problem. However, I ran ad-aware and it still shows the Alcan worm on my computer. Also, I noticed during the scan that it was scanning a folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Mike Miertschin\Complete

with all kinds of raunchy [bleep] files in it. I made a note of that and tried to find this folder, but it was hidden somehow, even though my folder settings are to show hidden and system files. Neither would it come up when I searched my computer (setting also on search for hidden and system files). I manually placed the address in the windows address bar and then it brought up the contents of the folder: 15 GB of [bleep]. Is this associated with Alcan, and why could I not find that folder when I was looking for it?

THANK YOU for all your help.

C:\Documents and Settings\Mike Miertschin\Complete

That looks as if you are running a P2P software that stores it's completed downloads in there.
It could also be put there by a virus. They often do this to camouflage themselves as the first.

Can you let me know which file gets identified as the Alcan worm.
I'll need to know:
- which scanner you are using
- the name of the file (very likely setup.exe or something similar)
- the exact location (could be in the downloads folder)

The scanner I've used to identify the worm is Ad-Aware SE Personal. Here is the logfile from the scan. Not sure if the .dll files identified are the carriers of the virus or if they're just some file generated by Ad-Aware...

WIN32.P2P-WORM.ALCAN.A
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»
obj[17]=File : C:\System Volume Information\_restore{EC0D2055-1D9D-4D2E-9975-6896B0797BDB}\RP47\A0006070.dll
obj[18]=File : C:\System Volume Information\_restore{EC0D2055-1D9D-4D2E-9975-6896B0797BDB}\RP52\A0006178.dll

I'm assuming that since the worm is P2P, that it must have set up my computer as a host computer to exchange all that trash it put on my computer.

I feel like I should be paying for this service. Are you funded by donations or what?

Thanks

Yes, we do accept donations, but only if you can afford it.

The found files are in your Restore Points.

If you are sure your computer is otherwise working fine you can get rid of the (infected) System restore points by following this procedure:
- Disable System Restore
- Reboot your computer
- Re-enable System Restore

More information:
http://service1.syma...src=sec_doc_nam

Please do have a look at my site about removing and preventing spyware.
