please help me remove PSGUARD! [RESOLVED]

Hi,

I managed to get psguard on my computer even though I have a firewall, AV,spysweeper etc
Based upon readings here at geekstogo, I attempted to clean my system of
PSGuard using the advice given to others in a similar situation. I have already invested so much hours into this with absolutely no progress.

I also followed tho whole "you must read this before posting a hijack log"

my own spysweeper detected ps guard but can not get it removed
ad-aware found nothing
cwsshredder found nothing
spybot found nothing
ewido found enough but cant get it removed either (i tried it 3 times)

then i did the trend housecall
no virusses

then the trojan hunter
said no trojan files found

didnt know if i had to download sp1a
since i already have sp2

when i look at my hijack file i do not see the psguard
but yet spysweeper and ewido find the psguard spyware but are not able to remove it
i am getting so frustrated with spending time and not able to fix it

Hi espeijer and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

2. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

Run HijackThis
Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Download the following self-extracting file smitRem.exe and save the file to your DESKTOP.
- Double click the Smitrem.exe icon on your Desktop.
- Then click Run>Start and a Smitrem folder will apear on your desktop also.
Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.
Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite
Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
- Install the program
- Update the definitions to the newest files.
- DO NOT RUN IT YET
Install Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions.
- Ad-Aware SE Setup
- Update the definitions
- DO NOT RUN IT YET
REBOOT your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
- Restart your computer
- After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
- Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
- Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now open HJT, click SCAN and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Click the Fix Checked box and EXIT HJT
Using Windows Explorer, please locate and DELETE the following files/folders (with all their content), if they are still present:

ALCXMNTR.EXE<==You will have to do a Search for this one.
Open the smitRem folder
- Double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
- Follow the prompts on screen.
- Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
NOTE:The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Let it remove all it finds.
Run Ewido:
- Click on scanner
- Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
- NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
- You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
- If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
- DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
- If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
- When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
- Save the report to your desktop
- Close Ewido
Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.
REBOOT back into Normal Mode
Click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut
- Do a full system scan.
- Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let me know if any problems persist.

hi trevuren

thanks for al the information
i did everything on oct 17 and all went very well
but then in the very end when i tried to scan with
panda active scan it starts scanning and in 30 seconds the computer just freezes
i tried about 4 times then i stopped

and started to whole process up the next day
but the computer keeps freezing as soon as i start the active scan

everything else what you asked me to do
like the smitrem
ewido
ad-aware
safemode
etc etc went perfect except for this last thing
can you tell me what i did wrong

Hi Esther,

You probably didn't do anything wrong. ActiveScan freezes up on a lot of people.

1. Please provide me with the smithrem report, if you don't have it, please run that utility again and post the report.

2. Please post the Ewido log. If you don't have it, please rerun the utility and post the log.

3. Please provide a fresh HJT log for review after you have the other two logs ready.

hi trevuren

for a s far as I know my computer is doing okay,its just freezing up once in a while
and he never did that before
and everytime i scan for spyware i do find one or two
is there any good software out there that prevents spyware from coming in
oh there is one thing thats weird .... my firewall turns itself of everytime
then when i start up my computer it gives a warning that i am at risk cause the firewall is turned off
this never happened before psguard

maybe you have some suggestions??
for the rest i am ok and ready for cleanup procedures

Change firewalls, I use Zone Alarm Free and it works just fine. Use Ewido, Ad-Aware and/or Spybot.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
Left click on "System Restore Tab"
Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
