Hi, I really hope that someone can help with this. ;)

I've already gone through all the steps requested in the "Before Posting a HijackThis.log thread.

Today (again) I did the following (after checking for updates on each):

Ran Ad Aware SE (no longer any problems detected)
Ran Spybot S&D (found CoolWWWSearch, as it does each time I run it)
Ran CWShredder (which finds nothing)
Installed all Windows critical updates (except XP SP2)
Reran full anti-virus scan (AVG) - eliminated another 8 trojans

Still, I am encountering the same three problems that I've been having for three days:

1) Instead of my normal home page, I keep being directed to realsearch.cc. I go in each time and direct it to "default", but I have less than a second to connect to that site before it changes again.

2) Each time I close an IE window, I get multiple windows opening of 69sexsearch.com. Each will then open other sites. This site is listed as "trusted". I have tried many times to remove it, and place it on the "restricted" list, but it immediately restores.

3) On the list of Favorites, "Free Hardcore Porn" is listed, with a subfile tastefully titled "Animal Sex". (Nice, huh)? :tazz:

As we share this computer with our kids, I'm less than delighted.

I'm hoping you can help. I've already gone WAY past my system knowledge on this one. I have little (read: none) systems knowledge. I now (too late, alas) realize that we had not adequately protected our system. I guess we all have to learn the hard way.

I know you've responded to a similar question, but it appears that some of my problems are different, and I'm afraid to tinker with the files without VERY specific instructions.

Please remember that I am a (loser)user, and that things that are intuitive to you (like running a scan in "safe" mode) likely needs to be explained in detail. If you could either provide the details, or direct me to a place where I can find them, I would be extremely grateful.

Here (I hope) is my HiJack This log.

I also can't get into Hotmail. I'm not sure if it's related or not.

I've tried some of the solutions already on the board, but only if I had a direct match on the Hijack this log.

Please take a look. I would greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide. I just can't get this fixed on my own...

Your last log looks much better than your first one! Nice work. :tazz:

1. Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original Hosts file.

2. Download and save file below -- Unzip. To execute this file: in Explorer - right-click (this file). Select Install from the Menu.

Download here: http://www.geekstogo...=download&id=40

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. ;)

Thanks. I apparently don't have permission to download that link. Can you please provide the name of the program, and I'll search for it?

Things look good! What a relief. This was a real bugger to get rid of.

Please let me know if my log looks clean, and if it's now safe to load Windows XP Service Pack 2. Will I then be reasonably protected?

Thanks again!

Go ahead with SP2.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN :tazz:

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. ;)

P.S.

Thank you SO much. There's no kiss smiley, or I'd post one. (And yes, I'm female. LOL).

Click Show All under the smilies.

Believe it or not, the problem is partially back.

Since eliminating this problem, I have installed XP SP2, as well as the five additional updates for Windows yesterday. I also installed Spyware Blaster as recommended.

I have updated all of my anti-virus and spyware programs, and done full scans.

Lo and behold, I log on today, and I get directed to realsearch.cc again, and all users on the system have "Free Hardcore p***" on their list of favourites.

I went through and repeated the Hijack this steps I did earlier. I did a scan to ensure that it was clean, and restarted. And they all reappear.

I've downloaded Microsoft AntiSpyWare (beta). It found two serious spywares that neither AdAware nor Spybot detected. I removed them. It also let me know that default browser settings were attempting to be changes. I blocked this, of course. I went into the advanced categories, and removed both c:\windows/system32/wuclient.exe and c:\windows\system32\xpsp2fw.exe from the registry start up programs.

While this prevents the realsearch.cc hijack, it hasn't removed the "FHC" from the list of favourites.

Any ideas what steps I can take to remove this permanently?

While AntiSpyWare is blocking the browser hijacks and the undesired startup exe's, there must be something still on my system. No matter how many times I 'fix check' these entries, they just come back!

Here is another HiJack log. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again, this is a great site! :tazz:

Please download "Del Domain" from here:

http://www.geekstogo...=download&id=40

Download it to your desktop or somewhere you will find it. Extract the .inf file from the .zip file you just downloaded. Now right click "Deldomains.inf" and click "Install". It will not appear to have done anything, thats ok. Next step.

Open Internet Explorer, click "Tools", "Internet Options", on the General tab, click "Delete Cookies", "Delete Files", and "Clear History. Next remove the following entries in Hijack This.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://realsearch.cc/?a=2
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://realsearch.cc/?a=2
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,SearchURL = http://realsearch.cc/?a=2
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,SearchURL = http://realsearch.cc/?a=2

Reboot normally and post a new log.

Thank you very much. I think this did it.

At least now I know how to correct these two issues (in isolation). Is this likely to just keep coming back again and again? I have no idea how I'm picking them up. I have everything enabled, and all protective software is up to date...

Here is my latest Hijack This log:

Very nice! :tazz: Del Domains deletes all entries in the Restricted & Trusted Zone list. Some of these hijackers insert themselves into your trusted zones list so they can put the entries back because your computer is trusting them.

I logged on this morning, and both problems are BACK!!!!

I don't know what to do at this point. I can correct them with the steps provided yesterday, but it looks like I will have to do that each time I reboot, unless I can make a permanent fix.

Any suggestions? There must still be something loaded on my PC.

Can you reboot into safe mode and make a new HIjackThis log.
Post that HijackThis log and do NOT reboot until you get an answer.

In the meantime install HTAStop from:
http://www.nsclean.com/htastop.html

I am not able to download that file. I keep getting a message that the page is unavailable. I did check that my IE is set to automatically detect settings.

Whatever this is, it is also changing the settings on Spyware Blaster. While I set it to "enable all protection", a few minutes later, on the "restricted sites protection list", all items are unchecked (and therefore, unprotected).

ARGH!
