Can you visit the site at all?
Or is it just the download that gets blocked?

If you can not go there at all, find this file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS
and rename it to hosts.bak

Then try again. Let me know. If necessary we will make it available in another way. [EDIT] Admin already has[/EDIT]

Pieter

More info...

At the risk of sounding stupid, how do you connect to the internet in safe mode? I tried adding the connection, but that didn't work. I couldn't even print the hijack this log and retype it here.

Anyway, when I went into safe mode, the following appeared at the top of the screen:

Microsoft ® Windows XP (2) Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158.service pack 2

Whatever that malware is, it seems to be part of the version I'm running.

Also, there now appears to be an "Administrator" on my system, in addition to the usual users. I don't know if one of the programs I downloaded caused that, or if it's part of the problem. I didn't set one up.

I was able to download the file. Should I block or permit HTA apps?

Block hta

- The Administrator account has been on your system longer then yours. :tazz:
- The messages around your screen in safe mode are by design
- It is better not to connect to the internet in safe mode. That would counteract what we are trying to achieve.
- I have no idea what you mean by "I couldn't even print the hijack this log and retype it here."

Run HijackThis. Scan > Save log
Reboot and find the log you saved.
Copy & paste the content into your next post.

Pieter

I misunderstood the previous post - I thought I was to post the log while I was in safe mode. :tazz:

I only mentioned what appeared at the top of the screen because the .exe that's causing me grief is the same name.

Here it is:

Close ALL Windows except HijackThis, especially IE.

Check the following items in HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,SearchURL = http://realsearch.cc/?a=2
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,SearchURL = http://realsearch.cc/?a=2

You should be prompted by Microsoft AntiSpyware about the changes.
Allow the changes to take place.

Scan again and let me know if they are still there or if anything in my instructions was not correct or not understandable.

Regards,

Pieter

Rightclick the MS Antispyware in the systray.
Click Open MicroSoft AntiSpyware
Click Real Time Protection
Click Application Agents
Scroll down and find Internet Explorer URLs
Click Manage Allowed/Blocked
See if realsearch is listed in there. If so put a checkmark in front of it and click remove.
Confirm your choice and close the windows of MS-AS

Regards,

Pieter

They are listed in "blocked". This program keeps preventing the hijacks. That's what twigged me to the fact that this bug was back/still there this morning.

I appreciate all of your help and patience with this issue. I wish I felt confident that it isn't just a couple of reboots from returning...

realserach is normally triggered by two files that are called
xpsp2fw.exe and wuclient.exe that will be in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder.

But I have seen neither of them anywhere in your logs.

Let us know if they return.

We will investigate further then.

Pieter
