Im really not good with computers but maybe you have an old moniter and its dying/loosing color?
Im sure someone can give you a better or direct answer that they feel confident about though

Sounds as if it could be a poor connection.
First thing to try is the cable from the monitor. Follow it back to the back of your computer - unscrew the connection take it off and reseat it - make sure it is secure.
If this fails switch off your computer - take the panel off so that you can get to the inside and take out and re-insert the video card ( the card that the monitor lead is attached to) there is usually one screw to take out to release it.
Take this opportunity to blow away some of the accumulated dust if there is any.
