My brother's XP machine has the Trojan Vundo virus. I researched the issue and came across this site, printed out the instructions given in these threads and then attempted to fix his problem. Kept running into an issue with typing in the second file path. VundoFix would come back with a message indicating that the path C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxxx.* does not exist.

What I'm trying to understand is, what determines the file path that gets entered? I've noticed on a number of threads the file path is different. For example, one is "rsrqr.*" another is "fgjlm.*" and so on. Appreciate any insight you can provide as to how to determine what comes after "system32\".

Thank you for your time.

Looks like I'm joining the long parade of folks infected, or at least Symantec is telling me (actually my brother's machine) that the virus exists. Here's the log file. Your help is so much appreciated and not taken for granted.

Thanks, John. Yes, I followed this up with another post wherein I put the HJT log file after I figured out what to look for. Just got home and haven't checked to see if that one has been responded to as yet.

Thanks, John. As I mentioned, this is occurring on my brother's computer, so I'll need to go back over there and recapture - may be later today.

Thanks again!

Yesterday I followed the steps given in multiple threads here and believe I had some success in removing the virus. A follow-up scan no longer indicated the presence of Trojan Vundo. However, his system is still moving pretty slowly and am wondering if there's still something in this file that might be hogging resources. I checked Processes and the only one I could see that seems useless was CCPROXY.EXE. Everything else was legit from the research I did. I updated everything on his 6 month old XP Dell machine as well as ran clean up (which removed about 100mb of garbage); updated virus protection; ran Panda and Spybot S& D.

I appreciate any additional observations you may have or if there's anything I missed in this log file. Thanks so much for your time.
