Internet Explorer is having lots of problems. Random popups for "breastgain" and "winfixer."

I've recently downloaded, installed and ran spybot search & destroy, cccleaner and microsoft antispyware.

Here is my hijack list log.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome sfrose to Geeks to Go!

I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program. This is very dangerous, as multiple AVs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through.
I strongly suggest you either:(1) configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic realtime scanning, and leave the rest disabled most of the time, or
(2) go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.
***

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Reverse the process when you’ve carried out the advise.

***

Please disable SpybotSD’s protection, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean.

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box and/or Uncheck Resident.
Close Spybot.

***

Please disable SpySweeper, as it will hinder the removal of some entries. Re-enable it after this advise.
To disable SpySweeper Shields
  • Click Shields on the left.
  • Click Internet Explorer and uncheck all items.
  • Click Windows System and uncheck all items.
  • Click Startup Programs and uncheck all items.
  • Exit Spysweeper.
***

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.
Please note: your AntiVirus program may prompt you to a malicious program running. Allow the entire script to run.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

    VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
This list of forums is provided as an example of where to go to obtain help!!

    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\system32\nnnmp.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = http://www.internet-....info/searchbar

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
***

Download and install Cleanup from here (Alternate site if the above is not working, go Here)

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

***

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

g2i2r4,

thank you!

Sorry about the delay in replying but I had a few snags...

Some notes and comments:

I still had Mcaffee installed on my system, but I deactivated it with each reboot and was only using AVG. But I've uninstalled now.

I had a bit of trouble getting into Safe Mode. I followed your instructions, but I was given a choice of:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

I didn't know which to use, so at first I tried plain Safe Mode, trying both my Admin and my user account.

I got a black screen with "Safe Mode" in white in each corner abd a line with details about my OS on top. My desktop was not displayed. I was able to call up my Task Manager, so I could switch user, and restart.

When I tried later with the "with Networking" option and my user account I was able to see my desk top.

(I telling you this, just in case it will help furture people...)

Since I rebooted several times, by the time I got back to HijackThis, two of the thinks you asked me to clean were not there:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\acccom.dll (file missing)

...

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnn.dll

I got a variation of "Blue Screen of Death" but it didn't automagically reboot. I needed to manually shut off the computer.

Because my inffextion was causing problems with IE, I was using Firefox, but ActiveScan whould not run in FireFox ("browser not supported"), I needed to open IE. (My geek boyfriend said that I could have told Firefox to "pretend" it is IE, but I didn't think of that.) Just letting you know this for future instructions.

Once I started Active Scan, it took a long time to download the files needed, and then check for updates. And at one point IE quit in the middle of it. When I restarted the process, the file download was qicker, but it still took a long time to scan my computer.

The safe mode not working seems to be a side effect of this infection. Unfortunately it doesn't appear on all infections, so there's no way of predicting who will have this effect and who will not.

Those two entries in HijackThis should be removed by the tool. I just mention them incase something goes wrong.

Panda can take some time to download it's definitions. And an AntiVirus could be checking what's coming in, thus slowing the process down.

Thanks for the feedback. We really need to know what happens so we can use that info on other users. :tazz:

Panda found a whole bunch of trouble in your 'oldmail'. You may want to remove that archive.

***

Download Hoster
Unzip it to a convenient place and open the program.
Choose "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK".
Close the program.

***

I see some temporary files running. Let's cleanup some more.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options"
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Scan local drives for temporary files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

Once it's done, press Close. Reboot the system. This will remove files that were in use during the scan.

One last thing was found in your System Restore Point. Let's create a new one.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Is the computer running ok?
If so, shall I post you some tips for the future and close this topic?

I'm glad that I was able to figure out an alternate way of getting into Safe Mode then. :woot:

I was kind of worried about Panda taking so long, especial when I needed to restart it a couple of times.

I'm glad I could help with the feedback.

That "oldmail" archive was from a website that I've taken over. I typically download all the files that are there. But this was the first time that they've shown up as infected. I'll remove that folder.

I've done the Cleanup recommended. (I just hope that I didn't lose a needed backup file in the process, since it removed all .bak files as well as .tmp)

Another Feedback point: The "My Computer" icon on my desktop is just a shortcut, so right-clicking didn't get the window you mentioned for the System Restore fix. I was able to get to it, via my Windows Explorer mening...

The computer seems to be running better than before. (At least no unwanted popups or hijacking of IE lately...) There's still an occasional Windows Explorer weirdness (a window doesn't display properly, but once I use the top back to shift it slighty, it refreshes.)

Edit: And IE just crashed while exploring other parts of this forum...

BTW, please excuse any spelling or grammatical errors. Sometimes, my typing gets a little sloppy. ( :tazz: I was embarrassed when I went back an re-read my earlier postings. :) )

Also, I'm currently underemployeed, and bills and food have highest priority. I'll make a donation when I'm flush again. Thanks again for all of your help.

Don't appologize, it's a pleasure to help.

Let's see if we can resolve the IE issue.
  • From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
  • Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
  • Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
  • In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
  • In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
  • Click the Search button.
  • In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
  • Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
  • Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.
Let me know how things are now.

It found it in

c:\windows\servicePakeFile\i386

But when I tried to install it, I got this error message:

The file 'IEXPLORE.EXE' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD is needed.

And then wants me to type a path...

Yeah, that's the window I got (except mine said "Home Edition" not Professional) and I did hit cancel...

I'm definitely not seeing the problems that I did last week. And that's a big improvement. It's just that my computer doesn't feel "squeaky clean." :tazz:

Sorry, I thought I already replied here...

I hit cancel and nothing installed. But I've rebooted since then. As I said before, my computer is working much better, just occasional fussiness.

Thanks again for your help.

Okay, I'll close the topic then.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with the instructions from the tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & Hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware – Download and install Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
