Hello. The dreaded Winfixer. I have run Symantec Fixvundo, Microsoft's Anti Spyware, Ad Aware in both regular and Safe mode. All three pick it up but it keeps coming back and back and back. Tried to delete pmkjj.dll in Safe Mode. TIA. Here is my HJT log:

Hello SFsurfer, welcome to G2G :tazz:

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmkjj.dll

  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\System32\jjkmp.*

This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmkjj.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

A weird thing happended on the way to the fix. My NAV (on its own) picked up pmkjj.dll. This was the first time it had picked it up after several full system scans. However, NAV could not do anything about the file and its not in quarantine. So, I set off to follow the instructions and the pmkjj.dll file was no where to be found. I followed the instructions otherwise. I tried to complete the Active Scan but it got hung on explorer.exe and froze. So, I had to reboot and I tried Active Scan again. Same thing, froze on explorer.exe. I ran ewido and it picked up several things it had not picked up before. Here is my HJT log and ewido report. I really appreciate what you all do here and will make a Paypal contribution.

Hi

Looks like it has gone

Just one entry to remove

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmkjj - C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmkjj.dll (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Reboot and post back a fresh hijackthis log :tazz:

Hi

Congrats, Your log is now clean :tazz:

What we will do now is clear out your restore points and will create a brand new one which will be clean.

-Click the Start button.
-Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives
-Click Apply
- This deletes all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
-Click OK.

Reboot your pc

Now follow the previous steps but this time uncheck Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives, click OK

You should now go and create a new restore point.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
