Hello,

I work on my parent's computer remotely from my home using RealVNC. My mom informed me that Norton displays a window saying her machine is infected with the Vundo Trojan ... ddcyy.dll is the file. Norton can't get rid of it.

I found your site through Google and have been reading about other people's situations with this virus. They seem similar, but not exactly the same. So now I'm here for some help and guidance. Your help will be GREATLY appreciated!

I viewed your preliminary posting and here are the results from those steps:

Preparation - No problems getting on the internet ... ignored this step.
Cleaned temp files the way you instructed

1. Ran Ad-Aware SE with updates and it did its thing and the problems it found were resolved
CWShredder did not find anything.
Ran Spybot S&D with updates and it found a few things Ad-Aware did not find ... problems resolved.
Did not find anything of note on the Rogue page.

2. Ran Trend Housecall - Initially it was saying that conhook trojan was found in jkhhf.dll, but after running it for a second time nothing found.

3. Running XP SP2 currently.

4. Still getting the virus window.

This advise needs to be run partically in safe mode if possible.

Please disable SpybotSD’s protection, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean.

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box and/or Uncheck Resident.
Close Spybot.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.
Please note: your AntiVirus program may prompt you to a malicious program running. Allow the entire script to run.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install Cleanup from here (Alternate site if the above is not working, go Here)

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Will she still be able to hook to the internet in Safe Mode so I can do it remotely, or will I need to be at her computer to complete this?

If you can, please try to do it on her computer. It's possible the infection is causing a problem in safe mode. Then, just try to do it through taskmanager.

I've completed the tasks at the computer. The trojan window is no longer popping up at reboot.

While running VundoFix, Norton popped up a window about a malicious script detected in file startjt.vbs. I allowed the script to run once.

The first time I ran HJT, I did not find the O2 line, but marked the other one as fixed.

I then did the Cleanup step and it found 4 viruses that were cleaned and one spyware that was not cleaned.

I then ran HJT again to make a log and noticed that both the 02 and 020 lines were there. I re-fixed them and then ran it again to make the current log.

To much nasty infections showing there. Let's run a specialised tool.

Download Stinger.
Save it to your desktop.

Double-click the file and press 'scan now' to let it run. Let it fix what it can find.

That's good news. The one left is found in the System Restore Point. Let's create a new one.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Is the computer running ok?
If so, shall I post you some tips for the future and close this topic?

Everything looks good. I re-ran Active Scan and this last time it didn't find anything!!

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Re-enable system restore with the instructions from the tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
  - Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  - Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  - Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  - Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  - Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  - Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  - When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  - If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & Hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Install Ad-Aware – Download and install Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
