i have followed all the instructions for "before posting a hijack this log":

1)cleaned temporary files

2)ad-aware se found 0 objects for removal (however when i ran it 2 days ago it removed 63 low threat green cookies)

3)cws shredder removed the following program - CSW.Look2Me

4) spybot search and destroy found 2 suspicious objects - disable notifications for windows virusscan and firewall - which i believe are disabled by my mcafee security suite

5)ewido found 7 objects to be cleaned - 3 of which were high level threats. i cannot retrieve the text file on hthese. i am running it again but am guessing that the cleaned files will be gone. i wrote two down they are the following : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ddaxu.dll and HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents (spwyware.virtumonde). if i am able to figure out how to retrieve the report i will paste it here.

6)trend housecall found no viruses

7)i have mcafee security suite. it has detected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\yayyw.dll as a "potentially unwanted program, but says that it cannot be cleaned as it is write-protected

8)trojanhunter found no suspicious entries or open ports, and not trojans or trojan files. however i ran Trojan Remover yesterday - it found the yayyw.dll but was unable to rename it :
"Trojan Remover forced a System Restart by terminating WINLOGON.EXE.
Unable to rename C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\yayyw.dll to C:\WINDOWS\system32\yayyw.dl$"

9) i installed the windows updates

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

i have finally finished all of the steps - took a long time to download the activescan on dial up. everything seems to have gone very well - my computer is at least reacting much better. everything did not go to the letter of your instructions. i am hopeful that it is fine, but nonetheless, i figure i'd better tell you the differences just to be sure.

1)in killvundo.bat, i entered the first file path - C:\WINDOWS\system32\yayyw.dll - and when i pressed enter it immediately prompted me to type the second file path - i didn't have time to hit the F6 or enter again. same thing after i typed in the second file path, after i hit the ENTER button there was no time for F6 or enter again. i'm guessing its just a slight format update?

2)for FIX CHECKED on the hijackthis list, i was able to check three of the four items. however the 02 - BHO: MSEvents Object ---------------\system32\yayyw.dll item did not appear on the hijacklist. i looked and looked for it. it does appear on the latest hijackthis list that i am attaching with this note - it says "(file missing)" after it.

3)after CLEANUP, i did not reboot - though the prompt said that some files would not be cleaned without rebooting. do i need to go back and clean those out and reboot later or is there a reason that you didn't want those files to get cleaned out?

4)i do not know what the registry compactor file is. i know that a friend of mine tried to do some things to fix this problem this past thursday night and he told me that the problem was probably in my registry. perhaps he put it there? if i don't need it, i'd just as soon get rid of it. (he also directed me to your site, for which i am very grateful.)

About the regcompact, as you say, most probably you friend installed it there. I also see you have/had two Trojanscanners installed (Trojan Hunter and Trojan Remover). I don't see the benefit of having two programs installed which do exactly the same thing and can cause a system slowdown.
However, I can't see them in your active processes, so maybe they are orphaned leftovers.
So let's take a look at your software uninstall list, because I want to know which exact program is responsible for that regcompact.dll as well.

Open HijackThis
Click 'config' (bottom right)
Choose 'Misc Tools'
Choose 'Open Uninstall Manager'
Click the 'Save List'-button there.

Copy and paste that log in your next reply together with a new standard hijackthislog.

Hi,

Your log looks clean.

The regcompact.dll is related to AMUST Registry Cleaner which is in your softwarelist.
I also see Registry Medic 3.01 (Build 408) present, which is shareware. So keep in mind that if you downloaded trials, they expire within max 30 days, so I suggest you uninstall it or buy it after the trial is expired. Also be carefull with registry cleaners, they can sometimes cause more damage than fixing if not used properly.
I also see you are having 3 antitrojanscanners installed which are also shareware. So if they are expired, you won't be able to update them anymore, so they are useless then.
So you have to decide in here what to do.. Or buy them, or uninstall when the trial is expired.

How are things running now?

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

everything seems to be running great - i am very grateful. the link to your paypal only brings an error message to me however - is there another link or way to get there?

i have followed your instructions and added spywareblaster. i have also uninstalled most of the programs that i installed in the last effort to get rid of the adware. i have kept adaware se and spybot s&d as well as hijackthis. i am attaching a final hijack this log and uninstall log to make sure that i did everything as you would suggest.

also as an aside - i am sure that you are very busy but i figure i should ask your expert opinion - i told another friend of mine about my problem and he told me that he had had a similar experience. he suggested that windows internet explorer is prone to attack by adware and that since he has switched to firefox he has had no more problems with virus or adware. does this seem like solid advice to you? as i said, i know that you must be very busy and don't have time to list relative pluses and minuses of both - and perhaps are not allowed to here - but i am interested if you think this is an option that i should consider seriously.

Your question about firefox... Yes, I use it as well, because I also think you surf safer with firefox. However, keep in mind, whatever browser you use, You can't be safe for 100%.
I see you have SP2 installed... so your IE is also patched and became much safer than before. Just make sure your Windows is always UP TO DATE.
Don't start with 'uninstalling' Internet Explorer if you decide to use Firefox, because that's a common mistake people make. You still need your Internet Explorer to get the updates for your XP. Also, some sites won't show properly in Firefox or won't work in Firefox... that's why you can still use IE to open these sites.
But set your Firefox as your default browser.
A nice extension for Firefox is IEview. This allows you to view pages in Internet Explorer while surfing with firefox if a site/page doesn't show properly in Firefox. You just have to rightclick the page and choose: 'View this page in IE'

There are also A LOT of other nice extensions for firefox. You can find them here: https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/
You can change themes in Firefox and so many other options, it has also a build in popupblocker which works great!
I'm sure you're going to like it.
