Mr Trevuren

Nail.exe is a utility which has been installed by me and which I have been using for years. Therefore I have not removed the startup lnk nor the executable file at c:\downloads\utilities\nail.exe as I am sure there is no harm with this file.

Pls note that the following entry was not found when i ran HijackThis which you had asked me to check mark
020-Winlogon Notify: Internet Settings - C:\WINDOWS\system32\104qlah51d4.dll (file missing)

All other removals were done. While rebooting on Safe Mode the winapma.exe file was found and was deleted.

Thanks/Rgds/Shankar.

A. Download a trial version of SpySweeper
  • Install the application
  • Update its definitions
  • Run the program
  • Let it remove everything it wants
  • Finally, when it has finished its work, REBOOT your system.
B. Please post a fresh HJT log for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

FYI, after each reboot, EWIDO security detects a L2M with a different *.dll each time and though I clean it i dont see any result after that. Also, spyware guard gives the message www.a-d-w-a-r-e.com spyware blocked from access. This still continues.

A. Update your Ewido definitions and run the program in Safe Mode. Keep the log and post it in your next reply. REBOOT your system.

B. Run SpySweeper again and post all results. Then reboot your machine.

C. Post a fresh HJT log.

1. Your system has a CoolWebSearch infection

1. Please download CWShredder. Download the stand alone version which is free
  • Check for Update
  • Click Fix.
  • Exit CWShredder.
2. REBOOT your system

4. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Sorry for the delay in responding, we have been having technical difficulties. That seems to have done something good. The stuff that Ewido was picking up is in the bad file backups which can be deleted .

Please post another HJT log to make sure.

Trevuren

Mr. Trevuren

Eureka. Even I feel things have straightened out. I am not getting the L2M detection by Ewido also now.
I really appreciate the efforts and time taken to sort out the matter. I had almost decided to format my laptop as I was getting irritated with the popups and was scared to access my bank accounts too with this malware aroung.

I shall definitely contribute whatever little I can towards this free service being rendered. Thanking you for sparing your valuable time/ Warm Rgds

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

It wasn't just Shredder. You had a particularly difficult variant of L2M which Required the normal fix run a couple of times to get rid os a lot of the junk, then the new SpySweeper attack followed by the L2m normal method and then Shredder. As you can see these are often more complicated than a lot of folk think.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Trevuren

Mr Trevuren

I really appreciate the efforts/pains taken by you to resolve my problem. I would like to put on record that this is a fantastic site to resolve all IT related problems. I really appreciate the time taken by you to help me out. Wishing you and your complete team full sucess and I wish to state that people like us should contribute whatever little possible by us to keep this free service active and going.

Please tell me how do i pay through Diners Club International Card. PAYPAL does not seem to have a link for this card.

thanks
