Here's a new one to me. I'm using 98se & suddenly, I can't use the shortcuts on my desktop to open any of my programs. The only icons that work are : My Computer, My Documents, & Internet Explorer. To open anything else, I have to go to my documents, click a jpg file, which opens ACDsee, then find the program to use it. I also can't get into anything in Control Panel. I get an access denied when I click any of the icons there.

I've run Norton, PCPitstop,Ad-aware, & Spybot. They all find nothing wrong :tazz:

I think there is a setting somewhere that says "Hide desktop Icons" and you may have accidentally clicked it. If you right click on the open desktop and choose "properties" I beleive you'll find it.

PS: I went there and did that and it hid all the icons, so that likely isn't it. You may need to restaart in ms-dos mode and run

scanreg /restore or maybe, scanreg /fix

then restart, go Start>Run, type in

sfc

and hit OK.

Now it's starting to sound like you may have the permissions changed on your machine. Go into control panel and check Users and Passwords to see if they are changed. If too much is changed, start suspecting malware and do the checks in that forum.

Hi Davideo
Have you installed any new hardware, software or windows updates before this started to happen?

"Hi Davideo

Actually, I did. I downloaded American Airlines flight checker, but removed it after I started having problems.

I also ran scanreg/restore & fix, then ran SFC like Tyger suggested. Still funky. Fix suggested to delete some files to make more room or reinstall 98. Only about 20% of my harddrive is used,so I guess I'm going to have to reinstall 98. Grrrrrrrrrrr :tazz:
Thanks

Hello davideo...

Open the "My Documents" folder and click "View" on the toolbar then choose "Folder Options". Under the "View" tab, make sure that "Show All Files" is selected. Click "Apply" then "Ok".

Click Start, point to Find then click Files or Folders and type shelliconCache then click "Find Now". If this file is present, delete it and reboot your machine.

Let us know if this helps...

Tried all that, found it , deleted it, didn't help. Ran pc trends online scan last night. It said I had a trojan called "verylince.a" . I'm going to try to get that removed today & see if that helps.
Thanks,

Maybe a trip through the G2G Malware Forum would help. Just follow the steps listed on the page from the link, particularly those on the Start Here link at the top of the page. This can help you clear most of your problems by yourself. If you still have problems after that, post a HiJackThis log there for the specialists to work with.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.

Hi Guys,
Been a while, but I'm still struggling with this locked Descktop & Controlpanel problem. I've done all the suggested fixes & ran all the progams suggested in the malware forum.I found several virus's,etc & deleted them, but still have the same problems. I also tried to upgrade to XP, but it reports I have "blocking issues" that must be resolved before I can install XP. I browsed over registry, but I'm not sure what I'm looking at. I did see a few suspect lines that had a different icon that said "locked time out",but again, I'm not sure how to proceed.

Is it time for me to post a Hijack this report? I sure would like to get this solved.

Thanks,
Davideo

Hey Guys,
It's getting worse. Where I've been able to acess my programs through ACDsee, it's getting harder to get in. I have to take more steps to open programs. That just started today. I'm not sure how to explain this, but basicaly, I've been using ACDsee like the old "File Manager" in 3.1. I've just been double clicking the .exe to what ever program I want to use. Today,it won't let me,I get a drop down box. So I have hilight the .exe file,go up to the file button, click it, & hit open.
If I ever lose the ablity use the "my documents" or "my computer" icons on my desktop, which are the only ones that aren't locked, I'm screwed.
I've run every test & program ya'll have suggested & then some. Still no worky. Please help.

Merry Christmas everyone,
Davideo
