[Exdeus]

I saw that this is an extremely popular problem, but from reading the several different threads, they all seem to require different solutions. I don't personally know enough about the inner software workings to find the problems on my own, so any help you all could provide with removing this annoying problem would be great!
The symptoms my PC is showing is that it gets popups even without a browser occassionally taking me to their sites.
Also, as a side note, I tried to run Ad-Aware on my system, and even after reinstalling it, it constantly stops on my folder E:\Videos. This is a very large folder (3GB) where I have some funny videos and music videos. When Ad-Aware reaches this folder, it just stops. It keeps saying its scanning and what not, it doesnt freeze, but it also doesnt move on from that folder. I even let it run on that folder overnight.
Also, is there anything else you all see in there that shouldn't be there or I don't need to have running?

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a mixture of malware and Vudo B with the ConHook too. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: SpyXposer

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hello there, and no problem on the 3 days, I understand you all are very busy here.

I am, however, having an issue with the safe-mode boot up.

I hit F8 and select boot in Safe Mode. Windows will boot up, showing all the drivers and what not being activated (scrolls through it), and it then arrives at one that says C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/agp440.sys and my screen flickers a few times.

After this, the standard blue-ish background comes up for Windows, but it quickly goes black. Then, the logon window pops up, and I enter my logon information. I have Safe Mode appearing in all four corners of my monitor. It then logs me in, and the screen remains black. After roughly 5-10 seconds, the standard Safe Mode alert window pops up mentioning you are in a diagnostic mode and to click yes to continue. However, before I can even read the first line or so of this window, it disappears into the black background. At this point, nothing else happens and my desktop does not reappear.

I tried to restart a few times, but am getting nothing with this. If I hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete, the standard dialog box does appear, as do all the other options when I click on them.

So basic problem rundown: my desktop is black and I can't do anything. Any idea here? This one is a little wierd...

If you want further information, I have an entire system profile through Aida32 that I can paste on here.

Basic information: Radeon9800 Pro running on a Samsung SyncMaster 730B 17" LCD.

Sorry you are having so many problems.

These are the two options for safe mode: During a boot, keep tapping the F8 key and choose Safe mode from the advanced menu or go to Start>Run>type in Msconfig>hit ENTER>Boot.ini and check off SafeBoot>Apply, reboot.

If that doesn't help, just proceed with the fix in normal mode and we'll work around the problem.

If you've got a little time avauilable, try this.

Run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Hey there.

I am now on a friends computer. I went through the Start/Run/msconfig and checked for it to boot into SafeMode. Well, the problem is that my computer now boots into safemode over and over again, even when I did the F8 and selected Boot Last Known Good Configuation as well as Start Windows Normally. So, they both now boot me into safe mode over and over, and all I have is that black screen and I cannot access the Start Bar to change the msconfig settings. Is there any way around this now that I am in this?

Also, I don't currently have my Windows XP disk on me as I am at college and it is home. So, I wasnt able to run the check properly. So, what do I do now to get back into Windows regular mode, as I am totally stuck.

Hi I've been asked to see what i can do for you. Boot to safe mode (like you have a choice, I know). Once in safe mode press ctrl alt and delete at the same time. Click on file then new task(run...) In the Open box type msconfig and press enter. If msconfig opens click the boot.ini tab at the top then uncheck /SAFEBOOT Then click on the general tab at the top and make sure Normal startup is checked. Click Apply then Ok The computer should now prompt you to reboot. Hopefully you will be able to get into normal windows now. If not the rest of the ideas I have get really tough and will all require you to have your windows cd.

Atribune: I actually booted into Windows again (for like the tenth or eleventh time) and for some reason, I didnt touch a single thing, not even move my mouse (which I tried before) and the Start bar as well as my icons randomly appeared, but with the black background still.

So, I clicked on start and run and reversed the changes. I then went to click on the VundoFix folder as instructed by CrustyOldBloke, and everything disappeared again, so I got lucky.

So, a huge thanks to you, Feron, and Kat for helping me with this situation.

CrustyOldBloke: I am going to run the things you told me to in regular windows mode since safe mode is not working at all for me. I will post the updated results

I had a PM telling me of your problem whilst I was blissfully unaware and getting beauty sleep (I definitely need it).

It looks as though everything is back on track for your PC to be fixed. My grateful thanks to everyone involved in the "rescue" especially you Atribune.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.
