I would greatly appreciate any help with this.

Norton's Antivirus identifies a Trojan Vundo infection and the warning window can't be closed.

I tried removing it with numerous spyware programs with no success.

I found and followed all of the procedures listed on "geeks to go" malware removal posting wit the following result.

----No malware found except by Norton's Antivirus and Trojan Hunter. Both identify C:\windows\system32\sstqn.dll as the problem file. Trojan Hunter names it vurtumunde.

----Trojan Hunter cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. Trojan Hunter schedules the file to be renamed on reboot. Several attempts have failed to remove the file, but there are several renamed files in the backup files.

----Hijack This also fails to remove this file and a second entry "Winlogon Notify: sstqn-C:\windows\system32\sstqn" as well.

----All of this work has been done in Safe Mode.

I am providing a Hijack This log.

I also noticed that an attempt to reboot in normal mode starts the microsoft installer which quickly appears and closes.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Panda finds the malware in the backups for HijackThis. When we are done, you can remove both instances for HijackThis. That will also remove the backups. You definitly don't want to restore these

Disable Spyware Doctor again.

Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Hi g2i2r4,

Looking Good! I no longer get the Symantic warning window. I have checked the processer usage and it is normal and not the 60% to 80% that was killing the machine performance.

This is what I have done to hopefully provide some protection till I hear more from you.

I have created a new restore point to return to the current Vundo free condition.

I have turned on the Spyware Doctor protections and the Symantec Anitvirus real time protection.

I will wait for further advice before placing the pc back into full service.

I have tried unsuccessfully to contribute for your assistance through Pay Pal on 4 occasions over a two day period. No matter how fast I type, the last confirming keystroke results in a message "Session Timed Out, Please start over". Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong? I don't see contact information on the Pay Pal screens to resolve this.

It good to hear everything is okay now. But you should be able to access any site.

"Cookie" settings are causing this. PayPal needs to create a session start and ending cookie. Please follow the instructions provide below. PayPal's website has an "https" address, which means it is a secure http site so you have nothing to worry about when accepting cookies from the site.

1. Open your Internet Explorer browser
2. Click 'Tools' located at the top of the browser and select 'Internet Options'
3. Click 'Privacy' located at the top of the window
4. Click 'Edit' located near the bottom of the window
5. On the line provided, type https://www.paypal.com/ and click 'Allow'
6. Click on 'OK' to exit all screens and try again

if that doesn't do the trick:

1. Open your Internet Explorer browser
2. Click 'Tools' located at the top of the browser and select 'Internet Options'
3. Click 'Security' at the top
4. Click 'Default Level' at the bottom
5. Click 'Apply'
6. Click on 'OK' to exit all screens
7. Shutdown all browser windows and open a new one
8. Try again

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & Hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
