I encountered this message everytime I boot up my comp :

"Generic host process for win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."


These are the error information i managed to obtain. Hope it aids in solving the problem.

Easiest thing to do, is go into SAFE MODE (tap F8 about once a second while your computer is in the process of booting up until you come to a screen that allows you to boot into safe mode). Once there, go to your C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder and copy the file ntdll.dll (right click on the file itself and select COPY) and then go to your C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder and click EDIT and then PASTE. Click YES to the warning about overwriting the files and then reboot your computer and see if the error is gone.

I recently went through the same error message. It came up about 98% of the time I started my computer. I searched the internet tirelessly, reading everything I could find on the "generic host process" error. I tried everything that anyone suggested. I ran virus and spyware searches: Spybot, Adaware, Microsoft Anti-spyware, A-Squared, Ewido, ClamWin, Panda online and House call online as well as Norton Anti-virus - all clean. Nothing worked.

Eventually, out of frustration, I removed Symantec System Works 2005, thinking that might be the problem. That was not the problem, but apprently many of the symptoms of the problem were hiding behind it. After removing Symantec I found that I could not enable (or even open) the windows firewall. Also when I tried a system restore I got a message saying that system restore was turned off. I checked, it wasn't.

The solution (for me) was to completely remove service pack 2. Not so easy for me because it was so badly corrupted that it would not uninstall from add/remove programs. I had to do a reinstall (without formatting) of windows xp home to remove sp2. After removing sp2 I ran scans again and came up with problems that were not previously detected. Also ran Registry Mechanic removing a lot of problems that went undetected before as well. Having done all that I reinstalled sp2 and Symantec, ran the updates for both and all is currently very peachy with me puter.

Symantec/Norton are known to not behave well with much of anything - and I've heard all the rants about SP2 as well, most of which are unfounded IF SP2 is installed properly, unfortunately, most people install SP2 from Windows Update site automatically while all their AV and firewall/security progs are running, a big no-no............. and with the Symantec stuff, I've even had to kill the processes, as merely shutting down the program/exiting won't remove the processes from task mgr

Can we have a little more information about your system...esssentially...what security apps do you have on your machine (and were there others until recently), when did you update to SP2 and did you make any changes or install/uninstall anything during the week prior to the problem presenting? Also, have you scanned for malware? This will help us narrow things down

i already solve my problem like generics host lately i noticed before that problem appear to my pc when i installed the hp printer drivers that the time the generics host error appear i try all suggestion that many people made but its not working.

i try to reformat and installed the winxp pro with sp3 and sp2 with out the hp drivers and its works no generic host error appear and my network is now in good and there is no devil appear…..

well here is a thought ,I had the same error & went through all the same reading & trying microsoft update yaya. well i figured out my problem.(the start of the problem) What i did i made a clone copy of my ide drive onto a scsi drive, well when it rebooted it booted of the new copy which was labled E: that system slowly started to have more problems. so i tried it again error still was there(note c: was not altered & worked but slow IDE!) I ended up using norton partion magic to change my c: to e: & e: to c:
GUESS WHAT . I am now running off the scsi AND NO ERRORS!!!!!!!!!! & flying.
