Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Do you know what this is for? -> C:\PROGRAM FILES\VDTOOLBAR\

If not, uninstall it via the Add/Remove panel and delete that whole folder.

Please download VundoFix.exe at http://www.atribune....ds/VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key (or F5 in some machines) until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit Enter.
* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* Hit Enter key once...
* Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\URSSS.DLL

* Press Enter after you did that.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\sssru.*
* Press Enter to continue with the remaining fix.
* The fix will then run HijackThis. If it doesn't open, then run HijackThis manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose NO when asked if you want to logoff.

Run an online virus scan at ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi, and thank you for trying to help me.

I printed out the instructions, deleted the VDTOOLBAR, then downloaded Vundofix.exe at the addy you provided. There was no VundoFix.exe file to double click on and I got the following text from the read me file:

This fix is for 2K and Xp machines only.

For 9x/ME machine please use dos to remove vundo

2.12 added messaging for the missing process.exe
2.13 removed forum list

2.15 almost a complete rewrite of the tool changes are notable to all who have used it before

I have windows 98se.

Sorry about that. You are only like the second person with Vundo who has Windows 98. I have 99.9% of users who have Vundo with Windows XP

We'll do it manually then:

Copy the below 4 lines to a Notepad file:

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Right click and copy the below lines. Go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\URSSS.DLL

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

Run these scans:

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://housecall60.t...orp.asp?id=scan. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. Also run Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here along with a new HijackThis log.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Right click and copy the below lines. Go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\URSSS.DLL

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

Hello Greyknight!

I was able to do 2 defrags early this morning, which I had been unable to do for over a week. I haven't noticed ANY popups today, and everything seems to be running smooth and FAST again. Thank you SOOOOO much for all your help! And I printed out the instructions to stay clean last night. I can't tell you how much I appreciate everything!!
