I have alcan p2p worm in my system (windows 2000). Adware SE personal dtected the worm and deleted some files but cannot remove the worm. I have winupdate.exe refusing to close when I shut down. My task manager is not usable. My Limewire starts up when I boot even though I had disabled the start application (in Limewire) on windows start up. I have dial connection and I think the worm starts the dial up persistently after start up I think. My Avast 4.6 Home version withe the latest definitions cannot (miserably) pick any trace of the worm.

Please assist to remove the worm

I thank you for getting back to me.

I looked at past cases in the Geekstogo forum and carried out the Hijackthis scan and carried out some deletions or fixing with Hijackthis. I also discovered I had the A4zeta beta 1 infection and I removed the value "O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [internat.exe] internat.exe" also with Hijack This. I deleted the winsupdate.exe and the winlog.exe files in the C\program files\ directory. However, I did not delete the internat.exe. Should I delete it?

My system I think is back to normal operation speed. My latest scan log is below. Please advise if my scan is healthy. Have I done enough, delete the wrong entries etc. Your assistance and feedback will be most approeciated.

There was no need to delete the internat line in HijackThis:

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it. (Please do not run the CCleaner utility yet.)

Step #2

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:

• Click Start.
• Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View tab.
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
• Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
• Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK.

Step #3

Reboot Your System in Safe Mode:

• Restart the computer.
• As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
• Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
• Press the Enter key.

Step #4

Find and delete these files and folders (if they are still there):
C:\at.exe <= this file

Step #5

While still in safe mode Start Ccleaner. click "Options", click the "Advanced" tab
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Click "Cleaner" and click Run Cleaner (bottom right).


Reboot your computer normally.

Step #6

Run Panda's online virus scan and perform a full system scan: Panda ActiveScan

Save the Panda ActiveScan log. Start HijackThis and perform a new scan.


Use the Add Reply button to post your new logs back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in. Also tell me how your computer is running!

I removed the Gaobot worm actually with my Avast V4.6 Home Edition. A subsequent scan from the suggested download showed there is no Gaobot worm.

Later, I ran a scan with Xoftspy (free to try version without removal function) and it reported I have the A4zeta beta 1 worm. Again I removed internat.exe value in my register and a further Xoftspy did not show up the A4zeta beta 1 worm any more.

Otherwise, my machine is running well.

Please advise regarding the A4zeta beta 1 worm.

Xoftspy is an program that is open to debate! It is on Spyware Warrior's Rogue List
So it probably is an false positive.

I recommend to uninstall it:

Please click: Start--> Control Panel--> Add or Remove Programs--> Uninstall (if found) any instances of:
Xoftspy

Then reboot your computer.

• Don't forget to re-hide all files and folders. To re-hide all files and folders:
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
• This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....
  
  Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.
  
  Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.
  
  This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and following the prompts.
