Problem description: The other night when arriving home from work I went to get on my computer and noticed some unusual things out of the blue. The entire contents of My Documents folder has been completely emptied, and my computer is running ridiculously slow for most functions I try to perform. I asked my girlfriend if she had done anything and she claimed just the usual of checking email and looking at some web pages. Any place that I try to access my documents from, from the desktop, from C:/documents and settings/Ryan (my profile name), from my girlfriends profile, or from another computer on the network, its empty, and when i right click and go to properties it shows 0 files and 0 bytes. As far as the computer moving slow, it seems its more within my computer, meaning i can access web pages fine and they load as fast as they always have, sometimes when I click the explorer icon it takes a while to pull up, but more accessing my own files on the computer through explorer tends to bog down and take a long time, freeze up, slow down other things I might be doing, etc. Before I discovered this website I tried to take the first steps i can think of and go through a normal reboot, ran up to date norton and trend micro housecall virus scans, and ran an up to date spybot search & destroy scan, only to reveal no problems found on any of them. I peeked in the usual places I always have when a problem arises to see if I see anything suspicious, log files, ini files, etc. So I then went to msconfig, and the suspicious part is under the startup tab, there are 3 startup items, first is NTUSER (which I'm sure you all know of), under command its /NTUSER.DAT and location is startup, next is ntuser.dat, command is /ntuser.dat.LOG, location is startup, and last but not least is ntuser, command is /ntuser.ini, and location again is startup. Now I know these are regular files on the system and are associated with windows profiles, but the odd thing is they have never shown up in this list before, whether enabled or disable, and when I try to disable them, it kicks them to the bottom of the list unchecked, but a new set of the same ones show up enabled, making them "undisableable"
. So my conclusion is either some type of virus that is affecting these files that no virus scanner is picking up (which would make sense since my documents have mysteriously dissapeared), or there has been some curruption in these files or other files associated with windows profiles, and has somehow taken my files also associated with my profile down with it. I believe that covers about everything I was hoping to cover, I will also make a quick note that everything under my girlfriends "my documents" folder in her profile, are all still there untouched.
