Hey, I am new to these forums, but after reading a few posts, everyone knows what they are talking about so this seems to be the place to ask. I will try to make this as least boring as possible.

I used to have a wireless network that used to be run on a 802.11b router. It was working great until I tried to do some gaming. Every couple of minutes, I would appear to have a freeze/lag/dropoff that could last almost 10 seconds. I could host games, but when i did, the other players would get that lag like I did, which sucked for them.

Notice that this freeze/lag/dropoff only happened in games, not downloading, uploading, or anything else you can think of. Obviously something is not right.

This occurance would also make some multiplayer games crash, such as mods off of halflife (Firearms, Counterstrike, Natural Selection).

I took several suggestions like upgrading the firmware of the router and whatnot, and nothing seemed to work. Then I thought that the whole router itself could be the problem, so I decided to take a trip to the store and pick up the 802.11g router and network card.

After getting the 802.11g router set up, I try gaming, like I did before. And still, I get that [bleep] freeze/lag/dropoff but it only lasts for less than 5 seconds now. It is not because I have a lack of signal because I tried gaming wireless right next to the router, any closer and it would have been in my computer.

I don't believe I have any virus/spyware/adware either. I run Norton, Spybot S&D, and Ad-aware regularly.

Any thoughts on why I might be having this problem? If you need some specs on my comp just tell me.

If this is not a networking thing, but I am pretty sure it is, just tell me where I should have posted it.

Which motherboard are you running?

Do you have your PCI devices running at stock speeds, or overclocked as well?

Hmm... forgot to put the motherboard in my computer info. I have a P4C800-E Deluxe. Actually, I don't know how to check if the PCI devices are overclocked. How do I check that, even though I don't think they are because I didn't touch any of them.

what is the model of your d-link router ? have you done a firmware update ?
I'm thinking you may have to just make sure your settings are set for what you are doing some times the built in firewalls will act up when you are linking in to play games if they do not like what they are seeing. I had to make changes on my belkin so I could remote to it from other computers out side my network in the house.

If you simply overclock the Front Side Bus, then you're overclocking the entire system--including PCI and AGP bus speeds. This can cause problems with network devices, video cards, and hard drives. ASUS includes a PCI/AGP divider, where the PCI/AGP speeds can be "locked" at the default recommended speed of 133/33MHz (see your manual).

Finally, make sure you have the latest BIOS, Intel chipset driver, and Network Adapter software installed from ASUS:
