Popups and CWS.Look2me - Hard to Remove [RESOLVED]

Hello. Today I started to get additional pop-ups when I visited websites that normally had no pop-ups. The pop-ups lead to the following websites www.matchservice.com, www.malloyins.com, adserver.softwareonline.com, www.hpa-inc.com.

I scanned using Spybot Search and Destroy and found nothing (but cookies).
I scanned using Ad-Aware SE and found nothing (but cookies).
I scanned using Norton Internet Security and found nothing.
I scanned with CWShredder and found something. The program said:
Removed CWS.Look2me
CWShredder said a reboot was needed. Unfortuantely upon reboot
an error is generated and CWShredder is terminated.
Rescanning with CWShredder finds the same problem.
I would appreciate any help. I am very impressed with the expertise that
I see in the volunteers on this website. Thanks.

Hi Neonate and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. You are currently posting your log in double space format which is very difficult for us to analyze. Please post your next ones in single space format.

To remove the double spacing in your log, please do the following:

Please go to Start >> Run... and type notepad.exe
Hit OK.
Now go to Format and uncheck WordWrap.
Close Notepad.

2. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

3. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

Run HijackThis
Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning.
It should look like this

VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
Press enter to continue....
At this point press enter one time.
Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
and then press enter:
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
- C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkll.dll
Press Enter to continue with the fix.
Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
staff then press enter:
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\llkkj.*

This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
Press Enter to continue with the fix.
The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkll.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkkll - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkll.dll
After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

HI. I attempted to perform your suggestions. The operations with Vundofix and cleanup seemed to go ok. When I try to do an activescan at the pandasoft website there seems to be a problem. The activex component seems to install ok and I can scan "My Documents" and no problems are found. If I select "My Computer" for the scan then the scan starts but it seems to hang when scanning C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe. It stops displaying new file names and appears to make no further progress.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
- Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
- Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
- Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
- Close the window with ok
Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode
- Restart the computer.
- As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
- Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
- Press Enter.
Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA<==Folder and all its content
Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE
Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

I did find the "MyWaySA" folder in the "Program Files" and deleted it. Here is the new Hijackthis log after following your instructions. To this neophyte the log looks considerably improved. Your help is wonderful.

Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
- Install ewido security suite
- When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
- Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
- The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
- The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
- On the left hand side of the main screen click update
- Click on Start
- The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
- REBOOT into Safe Mode
- Run EWIDO
- Click on scanner
- Click on Start Scan
- Let the program scan the machine
- While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
- Click Save report
- Save the report to your desktop
Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

Trevuren, here is the latest log from HJT. The next message will contain the ewido log. Appreciate your continued help.

I have always tried to be careful. I get Microsoft updates as soon as possible. I run my machine behind a router with a built-in firewall. I run Norton anti-virus, and Norton firewall. I periodically scan with Ad-Aware and Spybot. I send spam email to the bitbucket. Yet, I was still hammered. What a freakin hassle.

Some additional info. I was able to get a finished activescan from the pandasoftware website. Before the scan seemed to stall. Here are the results. Thanks.

A. Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note:In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
Select
- "Delete on Reboot".
- "End Explorer Shell While Killing File"
Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pmkhf.dll
Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

OK. I used killbox to remove C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pmkhf.dll and then I went to the folder SYSTEM32 and the file did seem to be removed. Below is another Hijackthis log. I have not experienced additional pop-ups but this may be because I am using Firefox more. Also when I use Microsoft Interent Explorer I have set "Internet Options:Security:High". Unfortunately, if you set security to "High" it seems to break lots of websites that use activex and/or java.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
Left click on "System Restore Tab"
Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
