Hi there. Sometimes I get a pop up called Winfixer and sometimes I get a popup called Windows security update or Winantivirus 2005. I have run Hijackthis a couple of times. I have tried to remove the offending files from hijackthis program and from the Vundofix program in safe mode but no luck. I used a reference from another help site where they walked someone through the steps of removing a similar problem. Also Spybot Rand D found Smitfraud-C but was unable to remove it. I don't know if that is related to my issue.

Here is a copy of my hijackthis log

Thank you very much in advance

Hello utschy and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a mixture of malware and the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter once.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINNT\system32\byvwv.dll
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINNT\system32\vwvyb.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINNT\system32\byvwv.dll

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: byvwv - C:\WINNT\system32\byvwv.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the programme then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hello Crusty,

Thank you so much for responding to my problem. I have a couple of concerns before I do what you recommend. My first concern is that when I go into safe mode, I get a black screen with Safe Mode written in all four corners. My previous experience with safe mode showed a desktop that had larger and fuzzier icons and limited program access. I was very proud of myself for pressing ctrl alt delete to get task manager. I could then browse for programs that I wanted such as killvundo.bata. I also accesssed notepad where I had copied instructions written for someone else with malware. Maybe this black screen is not a problem since I can access the needed programs but it makes me wonder if it represents the effects of a virus/malware program (although my assumption is that safe mode runs so that these programs can't do any harm?)

My second point is that I have already accessed killvundo.bat in safe mode. I have also typed in C:\WINNT\system32\byvwv.dll and tried to press enter then F6. Aha. I just noticed that your instructions do not ask me to type enter then F6 so I will try your fix and then email you if there are any problems. However, I still wonder why safe mode for me is a blank screen without clickable icons.

thanks, here I go

Hi there,

I ran killvundo.bat in safe mode. I ran activescan. I ran the hijackthis but couldn't find all the files that you told me to get rid of or maybe it was that one of the files was just a tad bit different. I ran cleanup. I just reran hijackthis and it looks like the bad files are still there? but you would know better than me. Also, all of a sudden my antivirus software which did not detect anything has detected the vundo virus. Is this because the work I have been doing has exposed it to my antivirus software?

Here is the result of my activescan. Is there a special way to copy the results of activescan similar to the notepad log for hijackthis?

Hello Adrian

If you are looking for logic when dealing with malware, you will go mad. There is no logic. You have to look at the results of your action and go from there. BTW, VundoFix updtaed on 17th October in UK or 16th in USA.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: byvwv - C:\WINNT\system32\byvwv.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Please post a fresh (final?) HJT log

Crusty,

I followed your instructions. Deleted those files from HJT. Deleted viewpoint while in safe mode. Reran HJT after a reboot and I think the log looks good but what would I know? Also, do you recommend specific antivirus spyware blockers? I have been using spybot SD and EZ trust antivirus which I got for free from Roadrunner. I didn't want to keep paying for Norton antivirus. I just switched over to browsing with Firefox. Hopefully that will make me less vulnerable. How do you protect? How do I find out how I contracted this malware?

Thank you,

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

These are my tips on staying safe, some of which you already have. Trojans are difficult for all programmers since the incoming files appear to be safe until they unload their payload.

Happy safe surfing Adrian!

Crusty old bloke,

I don't know how to thank you. I feel so much better knowing that hellion may be out of my computer. I assume you hail from the UK. My brother and his family just got back from a 10 day trip in London and my sister lives in London. I will attempt to use your recommended protection devices. What is funny is that right after I did the last successful HJT scan, I noticed that my AC power adapter died (I haven't confirmed this and won't be able to until the new adapter arrives) so I am using the last of my battery power until I can find a way to recharge or get an old computer out of storage. I thought that would be a great evil virus; something that can prevent your ac charger from powering a computer. Gateway told me that was unlikely but some of these tech guys seem more concerned with fixing their ipod playlists.

Cheers,

Adrian Utsch
