Hello,

I was directed here by some friends, so hopefully someone can help! I've been battling this machine for a few days now to no avail.

I've run several virus and spyware scans that have detected problems, but I can't seem to get rid of them.
On startup, windows installer keeps trying to auto-install various things. I've tried killing them with task manager. It also seems that all of my anti-virus programs are being disabled on startup.

I'm getting a lot of nasty things in my "running processes" list -- that annoying pokapoka thing, several svchost.exe (? I dont know what that is) .. something else called kxsk4s.exe. I don't know, it's just a big mess!

Also, I am only able to get to anything while in safe mode. (ie - these scans were run while in safe mode and there are less running processes than I get normally. Otherwise I get lots of freezing up and "not responding" dialogues). Each time I open a browser, windows installer tries to install Microsoft office with FrontPage. (!?!)

Here is a list of programs I've used thus far:

* Ad-Aware SE
* Hijack This
* Housecall
* CWShredder
* Spybot Search and Destroy
* AVG 7.0
* Ewido
* Panda

Basically everything I could find!

Here are some logs:

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :tazz:
I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy.

Before we can get started on fixing your problem you must change the location of Hijackthis. It should not run directly from your desktop or a temp directory. Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

Once you have Hijackthis running from a permanent folder, please reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Thank you! I appreciate the help, and was waiting patiently until someone could get to me. :tazz:

The AVG firewall seems to be intercepting a lot of stuff before it attacks me again, so now I'm actually able to boot normally, but I'm pretty sure I've still got problems. And I still havent figured out why windows installer pops up EVERY time I open a new window. That's highly annoying!

Anyway, here is my new hijack log after moving the program:

Yes, I think something is still lurking. Let's clean up your log and then we'll take a closer look.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the box below into a new text file. Save it as KillQoo.reg (set Filetype to "All Files") and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\gsmgtxs]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4882e860-b6a7-4f0d-93a6-f4a55c5c418b}]

Now Locate and DoubleClick KillQoo.reg-> Allow it to merge into the Registry!

Download the Pocket Killbox.

Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location and then double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:

    • C:\Documents and Settings\Jen\Application Data\Sskknwrd.dll
      C:\Documents and Settings\Jen\Application Data\Sskuknwrd.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\System32\dredo.dll

  • Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
  • Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Your system will reboot now.

Please run a new scan with Ewido and save the log. Post a new hijackthis log and the log from Ewido.

everything's good except for the windows installer popups!
i have NO idea what could be causing it

every time IE opens (or i open another new browser) or any program opens.. basically anytime i open something, windows installer pops up and tries to install microsoft office with front page. which i already have!

I see something that I missed before.

Click Start -> Run -> (type) services.msc

Scroll down and find the service called Command Service When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button(if available), then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Run Hijackthis and click on Open the Misc Tools section -> Delete an NT Service
Copy and paste this into the text box and click OK.

cmdService

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

When the installer opens up go ahead and let it install what it needs to. It's definitely not a malware issue, but I have heard of it before.

Also, I attempted to let the install do it's thing, but I get stuck right here:

Posted Image

I dont have the actual disk because this computer was loaned to me without any software disks or anything. Is there any way I can kill that thing somewhere so that it doesnt keep popping up EVERY time a browser or program opens??

Again, I'm sorry for taking so much of your time. I appreciate the help.

Let's try something and see if it works.

Open notepad and save a blank text file to this location.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data

Make sure that when you save it set type to All Files and then save the file as

data.bak

Reboot and let me know if you still get that install window.

It's not a malware issue, but more important than that, I'm stumped. :)
I'd recommend starting a thread here.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

    You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

    Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

    Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

:tazz: :)

Thank you :tazz:
I will do that

I'm missing a file called PROPLUS.MSI, and I've been lookin around elsewhere to see what I can find. We'll get it one way or another!

You've been a tremendous help with the bulk of my problems though. :)
I will be paypal-ing you a donation shortly. It won't be much because I am a poor grad student, but still! It's great that you guys do this voluntarily so you should be reimbursed. Thanks again!
