Hi;
I have Symantec, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster and Ewido installed & running.
During a scan Ewido told me I had 72 instances of infection by the MidAddle virus -- none of the other apps (scanning prior to Ewido scan) detected it, much less blocked it.
Ewido reports it cleans it (3 times now) yet at every bootup it is apparently regenerating itself. After cleaning I ran 'CleanUp', but this didn't help either. I don't know how to stop the regeneration....and I know it's not coming from the web because it re-appears before I ever connect to the 'Net. Please help.
I am including both a Hijack This and the latest Ewido scan & cleaning reports:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>End HiJackThis Scan Report<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

ADDENDUM:
Immediately prior to running this HJT scan, I did my weekly updates of all security programs (AdAwareSE, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster, Ewido SS, & Symantec Security Client) and ran a system scan with each, in that order (except SB, which I only enabled the new protections it had just added.) AdAware found ~ 9-10 tracking cookies as usual & cleaned them, but nothing else was found by the other programs (Ewido had already (again) cleaned the 72 MidAddle files this morning on bootup)....until the final scan, by Symantec. Symantec reported a spyware find, and the post-scan report advised:

Scan type: Manual Scan
Event: Threat Found!
Threat: Spyware.Apropos.C
File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\swprawex.dll
Location: C:\WINDOWS\system32
Computer: MAX
User: Waldorf Ford ((<< Note, this is this laptop's former owner - I bought it as a refurb))
Action taken: Leave Alone succeeded
Date found: Wednesday, November 16, 2005 3:06:04 PM
---
I have Symantec set to quarantine & clean the 'boogers' it finds....but in this case it said it 'left it alone'. I went back & specifically told it to quarantine - it said 'it could'....and immediately said again 'Left Alone' and that it could not clean it because the file was not found! However, it is sitting right there in the system registry, under C:\Windows\System32 -- so I'm confused about this. Thought I better bring it also to your attention.

Please advise of any further info you need - will be happy to provide.

My sincerest thanks!,
~Jay

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Make sure you have Word Wrap turned OFF in notepad when you paste me the logs. Notepad>Format>uncheck Word wrap.

Hi again Leena,
Is this 'apropos' thing related to the MidAddle infestation??
Note: this newest HJT report below was made _prior_ to cleaning the 72 found 'buggers' with Ewido. (But cleaned before getting on web just now.)
And here's the two new reports you requested:
Best regards,
~Jay

Hi,

Nice job. Apropos fix was for a different infection you picked ie. Spyware.Apropos.C. The fix worked fine and removed what it had to.
Now for the MidAddle problems:

Download CleanUp
Install the program, dont run it yet, we will later.

Next,

Run Ad-Aware with the latest update.
  • Download the latest version of Ad-Aware (Ad-Aware SE Build 1.06r1) from here.
  • If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
  • After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
  • Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
  • Once the definitions have been updated:
  • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
    • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
    • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
      • "Automatically save logfile"
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
      • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
    • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
    • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
    • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
    • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
    • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
    • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
    • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
    • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
    • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
    • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
    • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
      • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
      • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
      • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
    • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
      • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
      • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
      • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
    • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
    • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
    • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
    • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
  • Close all programs except ad-aware.
  • Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
  • Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
  • After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
Now run the CleanUp program:

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp
  • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
  • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
    [list]
  • Delete Cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
[*]Click OK
[*]Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
[*]When asked to reboot system select No
[*]Close CleanUp

Post a new hijackthis log and let me know how things are running.

Hi Leena;
I went ahead with procedure you outlined in your last, but there were some slight differences, as noted here.
(FYI, I already had the AdAware v1.06r1 build you suggested, and I had ran the latest updates last night so today's update (attempt) reported no new files available.)

In configuring AdAwareSE your instructions say, under "Click the Tweak" button......." :
Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning." <<< Mine says "Unload recognized processes & MODULES during scan. : already checked.
"Obtain command line of scanned processes" <<< Checked.
"Scan registry for all users instead of current user only" <<< Already checked.
In addition, there are commands for
"Run scan as background process" <<< X'd out
"Ignore spanned files when scannng cab archives" <<< Already checked -- left it checked. Question: Instructions don't say to check this - should I have unchecked it before scanning?
"Use permanent archive caching" <<< X'd out

Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
"Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion." <<< Mine says '...try to UNLOAD MODULES BEFORE DELETION'...and is already checked. Does not have the selection you specify. OK??
"During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary" <<< Already checked.
"Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot." <<< Already checked.
"Delete quarrantined objects after restoring" <<< Already checked.
And there are 4 other options - all X'd out, & left them X'd.

I went ahead with the full scan at these settings...if there is anything I should have changed, let me know & I will adjust & re-scan.
AD-AWARE se scan completed......

CleanUp:
OOPS......I (might've) screwed up :
I had made a NotePad copy of your latest instructions (in desktop folder)...and had that open to follow along item by item as I completed each step.
When I came to the line saying "Now run the CleanUp program:", I did. But I didn't see (offscreen steps) & so didn't set the 'Custom Scan' steps you gave me - so just ran the regular full Cleanup.
Also, when CleanUp asked me if I wanted to re-boot (so it could clean the two in-use files & finish the job?)..I selected 'Yes' instead of 'No' as you advised.
After re-starting & re-opening the instructions, I discovered my error....sorry.....but I immediately re-ran Cleanup with the Options/Custom/Detailed Settings you specified. It flushed a new 'batch' of files - the 'Prefetch' folder, it looked like.
Thought I'd best 'fess up' to you, & hope this doesn't mess anything up.....~8(
But continuing, below my signoff you will find the newest HJT scanlog.

Re Ad-Aware SE - Should I leave all these settings as we have them now, for future 'weekly maintenance' scans? I have been in the habit of just running 'Fast Scan', & about every 4 runs, a 'Full System' Scan

Re: "Let me know how things are running"..-- Everything appears OK at this limited point...Only thing I've done is saved these notes, immediately dialed up the www, & came here to post this.
Best regards,
~Jay

Hi,

Don’t worry about the slip ups. You did fine. :tazz: Thanks for that detailed report.

Re Ad-Aware SE - Should I leave all these settings as we have them now, for future 'weekly maintenance' scans?

Sure.

You’re all set. :)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Good morning Leena,
Sorry to report that apparently whatever we've done has not solved the problem. This morning on fresh bootup, I immediately (as has been my habit since acuiring Midaddle) ran an Ewido Fast System Scan, and the 'boogers' are still here - regenerated. Here's the scan report:

If it's any help, the first 72 of the 73 objects are always found within the first minute of the scan.
The entire scan takes 21 minutes, and the 73rd object wasn't reported until the last few seconds.
Please advise how to proceed.

Oops....forgot to mention: The articles you recommended "And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it. ".... both links are showing as invalid when I try to access them (yesterday and today). I would definitely be interested in reading them if you could advise the current addresses.

Hi,

1. There is a similar thread here at geeks to go with your problem and I believe those midaddle finds are all false positives.

Have a read at this thread:
http://castlecops.com/postp611213.html

2. As for the last entry that was found, by Ewido, is fine.

Have a look at this link, which will explain what a cookie is and that it’s not a real threat:

http://www.microsoft...fo/cookies.mspx

3. Last question,

Try this link:
How did I get infected in the first place?

http://www.geekstogo...&page=How_did_I

So, overall, you’re still ‘clean’. :tazz:

Hi Leena,
I'm afraid that I would - with the utmost respect - be inclined to disagree with that assessment. I read the link/thread you referred - there doesn't seem to be much ...ummm....what's the word...'involvement'?.... in the verdict that was given their client - either by the original consultant (who had ?sicked out?) nor the substitute who stepped in thereafter. There didn't seem to be much by way of analysis of the situation - and just between you and me, it seemed a bit of a copout.

Here's my justifications:
First, please go here and read this, and pay particular attention to the info under 'Category':
http://www3.ca.com/s...px?id=453088187

My first 'justification' is that the actions described as a consequence of Midaddle infestation, are pretty much _exactly_ as described! If you'll go back and re-read my first post in this thread, you'll see the various 'security' apps I have running. In addition to these, I also have a firewall set up, as well as the Yahoo Toolbar with their Popup Blocker and Anti-Spy running full time. In _spite_ of all this, ever since this MidAddle first showed up, I have been experiencing a good number of popups getting thru. And worse, as it notes, many of them are the 'PopUNDER' type which are designed to 'trap' you into clicking on them while in the process of closing multiple open windows. That is also exactly how I got the last infection that was cleaned out here - I clicked to close one of those 'your computer might be infected' windows (before I learned about using Alt+F4)....and a few seconds later, noticed something was installing itself!! It was Katy-bar-the-door after that, for awhile! Long story....

But back to the original thought.... just to establish how careful I _have_ been being....and FYI, I'm not just one of those 'happy-go-lucky' dumas's that just sticks in an anti-virus anti-spy/malware app & forgets it - I have been faithfully running every one of them at least once a week, after first updating each one before I run the scans.....and sometimes twice or three times a week when something acts a little 'hinky'.

And I know I must have run Ewido a few dozen times BEFORE it started reporting finding those 72 'boogers' every bootup. So the 'fit' in my reasoning here, is it is definitely something the machine has acquired in the meantime....else why would Ewido just have started all of a sudden reporting & cleaning them? In other words, the MidAddle is ACTING like a virus.....including hiding, and then re-spawning itself!

So - I'm experiencing the exact symptoms that are used to describe that particular 'booger'....symptoms for which I'm supposed to have protection. It installed itself surreptiously, and without permission. It acts to preserve itself. You know what they say about "If it walks, swims, flies & quacks like a duck....."??? *LOL*

And finally, for my last piece of 'evidence'....I only ask that you do the most simple of things - merely Google the keyphrase "MidAddle". I just did (for the 2nd time)......and got ~19,200 hits -- every one of which seems to refer to it as a virus. Hopefully you will therefore understand why I say I believe it is in fact a bona-fide virus....and not just 'false positives'.

The prosecution rests........

PS: I will definitely check out the new link. Oh....and I _know_ what a cookie is, & does......and what they are & are NOT 'supposed' to do. I just included that one notice because it did come up in the report. ~8)

Hi again Leena...
The Panda Activescan turned up this :

Incident Status Location
Adware:adware/gator No disinfected Windows Registry

And the "Adware:adware/gator" phrase was a hyperlink to:
<http://www.pandasoft...eteccion=18331>

Reading the info contained there - I note that one or two of my 'security' applications are _supposed_ to block un-granted ActiveX installations. I did not follow any of the actions given there.

Cordially,
~Jay
