Help an obsolete mainframe Cobol pgmr find a new language

Cobol is very similiar to most high level programming languages such as C or Visual Basic, so it shouldn't be too difficult to trangress from it.

Easiest way to try out Visual Basic is to Google for the Visual Basic Control Creation Edition, this is a free cut down version of Visual Basic 5 with help files and everything but doesn't allow you to make full blown stand-alone executable files. But it's a nice way to start.
