1.run the symnrt.exe removal tool which can be downloaded from here.
restart the computer.

2.delete the following folders if they are seen
c:\program files\common files\symantec shared
c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\symantec
(Application data folder is a hidden folder)
c:\program files\norton
c:\program files\symantec
c:\program files\symnetdrv

3.open registry editor.
start\run\type regedit
click ok
take a backup of it.
delete the following registry keys
hklm\software\symantec
hkcu\software\symantec

4.check for the following services to be in automatic and started
eventlog,task scheduler and windows installer

5.doing a cleanboot in windows XP
open msconfig,start\run\type msconfig
click ok
In the MS system config utility,if it is in normal startup change it to selective startup.if it is in selective startup already,switch to normal and switch back to selective startup.
click services tab at the top.
at the bottom put a tick mark in hide all microsoft services.
click on the disable all button.
click startup tab at the top.
click disable all button at the bottom.
click apply .click close.click restart.
restart the computer and reinstall norton and it should install fine.

6.post installation task
once installation is complete,click restart windows later and click finish.
click start\run\type services.msc
change the symanteccoreLC service from manual to automatic and start the service.
open msconfig,click start\run\type msconfig\click ok
in the MS system config utility,change it to normal startup and click apply,click close.click restart

7.after the pc restarts,activate the norton and start using it.
