Hello.

I have gone through the necessary steps addressed in the Forum Rules.

I'm having problems with WinFixer and possibly other similar things. I most often get the WinFixer popup, but there are others. I don't remember what they are, because there are many different ones. I do recall one was an advertisement for bras (haha). I've also had a grey box pop up a few times... And again I'm not going to be helpful because I can't remember what it says. But it comes back if I click "Cancel". I have the google toolbar blocking pop ups and I know some get past it, but I believe what I'm dealing with at present is from malware.

I removed WinFixer from my computer a month or two ago, but it's definitely returned. Also I don't remember what I did to remove it, and since I believe there are other things wrong with my computer, I'm hoping someone can help me!

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have the dreaded Virtumonde infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep. Also please note that you appear to have two antivirus programmes running in real-time (Avast and McAfee). This will cause conflicts and slowness. Please uninstall one of them

Firstly could you please disable Avast Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

Please AOL AntiSpywareApp from running, if it is. I could not decide from the log entry.

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those two programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

I'm following your instructions but running into some problems.

I uninstalled McAfee virus scan before I installed Avast, but i still have McAfee Personal Firewall running. I can't figure out if Avast also has a firewall. But I shouldn't currently have two virus scanning programs. I don't know how to read the HijackThis log... does it indicate I still have McAfee virus running? I'll try to figure out if Avast has a firewall and choose one program or the other.

I have Avast AntiVirus, but I don't think I have a spyware program from them. But I'll disable antivirus.

I need to speed up the process of getting rid of AOL and getting a new internet service. It doesn't appear that I can disable their antispywareapp. At least I can't figure out how to.

I tried three or four times to start my computer in safe mode. I'd get to "safe mode" but all it would be was a black screen with "safe mode" in the corners. No start menu, folders, windows. I could ctrl-alt-delete and get the task manager, but that is all.

Hello again

I don't think your PC is a shambles at all. When I look at your log of running processes, I really don't have time to check every file, if I did, I would only do two a day. Most of the files I know by name. So to qualify what I see and write, I always use the word "appear". There can be no substitute for local knowledge; you know better than I exactly what is on your PC.

Your problem with safe mode; these are the two options for safe mode: During a boot, keep tapping the F8 key and choose Safe mode from the advanced menu or go to Start>Run>type in Msconfig>hit ENTER>Boot.ini and check off SafeBoot>Apply, reboot.

If you still cannot get to safe mode, continue with the fix in normal mode and we'll workaround it.

I went to the link you provided and it directed me to Panda spyXposer which I thought was strange, because I was expecting it to be called "ActiveScan". I ran it anyway. I'm not sure if I was supposed to have Avast disabled but I didn't, and suddenly it alarmed me that spyXposer had d/led a virus! So needless to say I don't have an Activescan result.

Hello again

It does appear that what I knew as PandaScan, then became ActiveScan is now to be known as SpyXposer. This I first noticed on Saturday last.

According to the VundoFix log the file we want to delete, it could not. There is no reason given so I am going to have to guess, and that is because I believe it was deleted by Avast. I base this upon the fact that you mentioned it, and a good AV would see the culprit file, but not the backwards file, and the fact that it has been removed from your registry. So after that.................................

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.
