Try going into the DEVICE MANAGER (right click MY COMPUTER, select PROPERTIES, click the HARDWARE tab and then click the DEVICE MANAGER button) and click the '+' symbol next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives and then RIGHT CLICK on the cd-rom drive in question and choose UNINSTALL. Then reboot your computer and let Windows reinstall the drivers for it and see if you still have the same problem.

It is the weirdest problem... When u go on my computer and highlight the dvd drive it says that it has 702 free space and 702 in total size but the thing is i have nothing in that drive and when i put dvd's or cds in that drive it says the same thing! When right click it and try to go on properties on the dvd-rw drive it just comes up as the desktop!
is the behavior above(posted here) still happening? what happens when a known good disk is inserted?
what changes, if any, were made on the PC prior to failing(new hardware, new software, other)?

right click Start
left click Explore
is there a '+' next to My computer? if so, left click the '+'
look for the cd drive(D:, E:, F:,...)
left click on the cd drive

what you are seeing appears to be 'normal' behavior. when i click on an empty dvd drive on an xp pc a message is displayed "please insert disk". when cancel is pressed, the cursor jumps to a hard drive.
when explore starts at the desktop, all you need to do is navigate to the dvd drive. insert a disk and see if you can see it's contents using explore.
