I have an HP Laptop running Windows XP Professional. I started having problems today after the machine froze up and I rebooted. The system starts but no desktop, icons or toolbar show (mouse clicks do not have any effect). I can ctl+alt+del and can get the task manager up. There are no applications but many processes running happily. When I try to start a new task (like cmd) I get an error box saying "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel".

I tried logging off and logging in as a different user but get the same results. I tried safe mode, last known good configuration with same results. If I boot in safe mode with a command prompt, then I get a cmd window and can run some programs (regedit for example) from that window. But still, cannot start a new task from the task manager (same error as above). I tried running SFC from the command prompt but won't run (error: The RPC server is unavailable).

I tried renaming the user profile and logging back in but still have the same problem.

I followed the steps described in the " You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Required steps before posting your log". Ad-aware and Ewido found some infections and cleaned them. TrojanHunter did not find anything (I did all these from safe mode with a commandprompt). Rebooted after all the steps but still having the problem.

The HiJackThis and Ewido logs are attached for review and advice. Your help is appreciated.
