My daugher-in-law has a computer (with dial-up) that was filled with Spyware.
Ran Microsoft's Anti-Spyware software and took care of that problem.
Ran McAfee's Stinger product just to see if anything else was lurking around.

My issue now is that on boot up and profile log on, the desktop contains no
icons. I can not return the system to her in this condition.

Can run a Taskmanager and create new tasks fine.

Loaded up MMC and everything looks fine, folder structurewise.

The Start button and Taskbar are also missing.

I have been up on theeldergeek.com website looking for registry hacks.

Tips from Microsoft say that I need to turn on the Show Desktop Icon feature,
but I think I need to know a registry setting hack to accomplish this suggestion.

Thanks for any help or suggestions anyone can provide.

Open the Task Manager click File/New Task and type SFC /scannow (note the space). You will need an XP CD to complete this, then restart and see if it worked correctly.
If it doesn't work, your account could be corrupt, so you'll have to make a new one and transfer your files over to it.

Tried the command suggested.
Rebooted.
No luck.

Created new user account.
It has the same problem, blank desktop.
Can still use taskmgr to start a new task.

Start the task explorer.exe and see if it works. If it does, restart and see if it works now.

Explorer.exe works fine.
(I was able to run this program prior to doing the SFC /scannow command without any issues. In Explorer, I can see the items that should be on the Desktop. They are just not showing up after logging in.)

Performed cold boot on system.

Brought system back up, same issue.

When the blank desktop image appears, I can see the hourglass for about three seconds, then it goes away and the blank desktop remains.

I suggest you try an XP repair. There is a link with instructions in my signature.

Good News to report !
The Start button and Desktop Icons are back !

Your Visual Basic Script said that it was going to boot the computer.
I acknowledged ok and waited a few minutes.
It did not boot, so I booted it.

System came back and was succesfully performing an UNDO of a System Restore.

System is very slow now and difficult to use.

Brought it up in Safe Mode and currently running Microsoft's Anti-Spyware on it.

Would you have time to look at a HijackThis report to see if something is screwing
around with the computer?

I found a couple of services running that were suspicious and stopped them.

Thanks for all the help !
