I am new here, and just wanted to say thanks ahead of time for taking your time out to help others like myself.

I have NOD32 as my virus scanner, and use Ad-Aware SE Personal. Although it (being the adware, virus, or whatever) doesn't seem to be slowing down anything, or making things hard to access, I get a pop up that comes up when my NOD32 virus scanner detects it. The file is always moved to the quarantine, but I get the pop up, roughly, 3 times an hour or so. Doesn't seem to be truly cleaning, or getting rid of the problem.

Thanks again, in advance.

Here's a screen cap:

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00000000-0000-421B-8114-C2338EE58929} - C:\Program Files\nkpaf11h\nkpaf11h.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nkpaf11h] C:\Program Files\nkpaf11h\nkpaf11h.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked

Lets run one more scan to get any leftovers that ewido missed

Please run this online virus scan:
Panda Active Scan You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
  • A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
  • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
  • Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
  • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
  • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
  • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
  • I will need you to post that report in your next reply; simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here. Also post a new Hijack log

Thanks :tazz:

Good

Download and install CleanUp! Here
but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit

Check in add/remove programs in your controll panel and uninstall Lycos if present

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program When asked to reboot click NO

Now open pocketkillbox Select the option "Delete on reboot".
Now highlight and 'copy' (Ctrl + C) the entire list of filepaths below:
Click 'File' on the killbox menu at the top and choose 'Paste from clipboard'
The entire list should now be in the "Full Path of File to Delete"
field. To check, click on the dropdown-arrow next to that field.
If you expand it, these lines should all be there

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ia.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msaps.dll
C:\WINDOWS\pcconfig.dat
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32a.sys
C:\WINDOWS\weirdontheweb_topc.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Lycos

Then press the red button with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES.When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES.

Post a new hijack log and tell me how your system is running now.

Thanks :tazz:

Ok, thanks. I really appreciate this. One problem. When I chose to 'Paste from clipboard', the path for Lycos wasn't showing up in the drop-down list. Is there a reason for that? Other than that, everything went good.

*My system is running good, and I haven't seen any signs of malware anywhere. Thanks.*

Were you able to uninstall lycos? Not sure why it didn't show up but you can go ahead and delete that lycos folder manually (probably no need for safemode)

Let me know how it goes and post a final Hijack log too

Thanks :tazz:

For some reason, that folder was empty. I didn't even uninstall it, because it wasn't even in the 'add or remove programs' to uninstall. Anyways, I deleted the folder. Everything went good.

Here's my new HijackThis log:

That looks good :tazz:

Congratulations

your system is clean :)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Wow, ok. Thanks for all of your help, and i'll be sure to post again if (don't wanna jinx it) I happen to come across another problem.

Thanks for the links, and tips, btw. I'll make sure to get that stuff on my computer.

Thanks again...
