I've done everything on the newbie page:
ran avg, microsoft antispyware, installed and ran adware, spybot and rebooted. Still have "spyware detected page" alert when I try to get online. What else should I do?

Here's my hijack log as per the newbie instructions - thanks for any help!

Hi notcomputersavy and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

2. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

  • Download the following self-extracting file smitRem.exe and save the file to your DESKTOP.
    • Double click the Smitrem.exe icon on your Desktop.
    • Then click Run>Start and a Smitrem folder will apear on your desktop also.
  • Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

  • Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite

  • Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
    • Install the program
    • Update the definitions to the newest files.
    • DO NOT RUN IT YET
  • Install Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions.
  • REBOOT your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
  • Now open HJT, click SCAN and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.c.../search/ie.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = <a href="http://www.insightbb.com/" target="_blank">http://www.insightbb.com/</a>
    O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {3bf1f86f-b1a8-489b-8d8b-43781d51411f} - C:\WINNT\System32\hp1776.tmp
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P.S.Guard] C:\Program Files\P.S.Guard\PSGuard.exe

  • Click the Fix Checked box and EXIT HJT

  • Using Windows Explorer, please locate and DELETE the following files/folders (with all their content), if they are still present:

    C:\WINNT\system32\mssearchnet.exe
    C:\WINNT\System32\nvctrl.exe
    C:\WINNT\System32\hp1776.tmp

  • Open the smitRem folder
    • Double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
    • Follow the prompts on screen.
    • Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
NOTE:The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

  • Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Let ir remove all it finds.

  • Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    • Close Ewido
  • Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

  • REBOOT back into Normal Mode

  • Click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut
    • Do a full system scan.
    • Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
  • Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let me know if any problems persist.

Regards,

Trevuren

Thanks for the prompt reply! Can't seem to get past #1 though - I downloaded the smitRem.exe file and saved it to my desktop (there's an icon on my desktop) but when I try to open it, I get an error :
"Incorrect file size, please try downloading this file again." I did try to download it again from your link but received the same message. Please advise.

Thanks!

Trevuren - I was able to use the smitrem.exe link and followed all directions. When I rebooted and clicked on Internet Explorer - I was no longer getting the "you've been infected" screen!! Thank you so much!

Some issues to note:
The only things I had trouble with were
#13 I went to Control Panel and clicked Display, but did not have a "Desktop" option so I was not able to uncheck "Security Info"
#15 Went to panda activescan and ran a scan. Did not see an option to select "full system scan", did not see an "autoclean" box but I posted what I found

Can you tell me how to find my smitfiles.txt? I went to Windows Explorer and did a search on that file name and nothing came up.

From ome of the people responsible for developing this tool:

I have seen others report the same thing, but as of yet have no idea why it happens. Most say it eventually works after several tries though. You might suggest trying right click>save target as

Using Windows Explorer, please navigate to the C:\ drive icon and click on it. In the right hand pane, check at the bottom, below the folders. For smitfiles.txt.

I just ran the program and although I am running XP, that is where I found it.

Just a question. Something I missed in the first go around. Did you perform an upgrade of your operating system? All of a sudden, your system jumped from Windows 2000 to Windows 2000 SP4.

Trevuren- Yes I did upgrade my OS. I tried to do that initially, before posting my original thread, but it seemed that my computer was locking up (the status bar wasn't moving at all for a long time). So I tried again (after I had posted initially) and let it run for awhile - it worked that time. Hope this didn't mess anything up.

Here's the HijackThis log that I just ran:

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and I will provide you with some recommendations that you may find helpful..
