About a month ago I was having problems with my Dell Inspiron computer. After talking with the Dell help desk, they determined that my downloaded version of Service Pack 2 was causing the problem. To solve it, I removed Service Pack 2 and was instructed to reinstall using a CD from Microsoft (which I am still waiting to receive).

Since that time, my computer has been attacked by several spybots and hijack spyware. The initial one was "About:blank", which defaulted my home page to About:blank any time. But other malware was present as well, including CWS.

I have used Ad-Aware, eTrust and several other applications to clean it up as much as I can. My computer is now functioning okay, but every time I do a scan, a new malware appears. Different applications yield different results, and none of them seem to total solve the problem.

Could someone please take a look at the following HijackThis log and offer some advice on how to remove the malware for good? Any help is much appreciated! The log is as follows:

Hi RB87

1) Please make sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.awmdabest.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.awmdabest.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted IP range: 206.161.125.149
O15 - Trusted IP range: (HKLM)

2) Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original Hosts file.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. ;)

I should also add that when I start-up Windows, a message box comes up that says it could not find a .DLL key. I press OK, and everything seems to be okay, but not sure if that's a problem along with the trusted zones that have reappeared...

thanks!

Hi RB87,

Download CWShredder from http://www.intermute...r_download.html
Use the Fix button.

If the reports of the missing dll persist, could you let us know the exact name of that dll, please?

Regards,

Pieter

Thank you Pieter...I will run CWS Shredder and publish the dll name when I return home. Should I also rerun HiJackThis and check to fix the two trusted zones that were reappeared?

Thank again!

Post the log but leave the Trusted Zones items in. It may tell me what we are dealing with.

Hi Pieter-

I have a few updates for you:

1) I ran CWS Shredder and it found nothing.

2) After running CWS Shredder, I ran eTrust Pest Patrol, and it found CWS.Feads. The specific source is in the hkey root directory and is listed as LEGACY_(squaresymbol)*008F*0010%AF*00E5*0003*00178001A*00A4*00B6*00C0*00A8
eTrust cannot quarantine this, and I cannot simply delete it using RegEdit

3) After I enter my password to start up my machine, Windows posts an Error message that simply states "DLL could not be opened" with an ok button. I click ok, and windows continues to load.

4) Here is the latest HiJackThis log:

OK, based on my experiences in the past I will need one of you starting files to have a look at.

Can you mail me a (preferably zipped) copy of C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
Send it to pieterATwilderssecurity.org (replace AT with @)

I should be able to tell which dll it is looking for and will provide you with a dummy to take it's place.
Provided this is what I think it is.

This will only work if Quicktime was installed before you got infected. Send me another starting file if it was installed afetrwards.

Oh, and uninstall the ViewPoint Manager (it's spyware)

Regards,

Pieter

Thank you Pieter-

Sorry I did not reply earlier; I was out of town. A few updates for you:

1) I sent the qttask.exe zipped to you

2) I removed ViewPoint Manager as a program (it is still showing up in the HijackThis log though)

3) eTrust is still finding the same CWS.Fead I mentioned earlier.

4) Latest HijackThis log as follows:

Emailed you back. qttask.exe was clean.

Download CWShredder from http://www.intermute...r_download.html
Use the Fix button.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - c:\program files\partypoker\IEExtension.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - c:\program files\partypoker\IEExtension.dll

Download: DelDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

Then reboot and delete:
c:\program files\partypoker <= entire folder

Then if AVG still finds it can you post the full path and filename of the file it says to be CWS.FEAD

Pieter

Hi Pieter-

Thanks for the info...much appreciated. Here are the updates for you:

1) I did all you said in your last message, however, I could not install DelDomains.inf. I downloaded it to my computer, and whenever I tried to install it, it just said "installation failed"

2) Nothing was found with AVG

3) eTrust continues to find CWS.Feads with the same path I mention above (hkey root directory and is listed as LEGACY_(squaresymbol)*008F*0010%AF*00E5*0003*00178001A*00A4*00B6*00C0*00A8)

4) My latest HJT log is as follows:

OK. Your log is clean now. so Delldomains must have worked anyway.

So all we have left is this undeletable registry key?

Can you try and navigate to that key in the Registry Editor
(Start > Run > regedit > OK)
Click Registry > export file and save it to somewhere where you can fin it again.
Then find that file, rightclick it and choose Open with .... Notepad
Post the content.

Pieter

So all we have left is this undeletable registry key?

Yes, that and the "DLL cannot be opened" box that comes up every time I start up.

Here is the registry key:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_*008F*0010%AF*00E5*0003*0017*001A*00A4*00B6*00C0*00A8]
"NextInstance"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_*008F*0010%AF*00E5*0003*0017*001A*00A4*00B6*00C0*00A8\0000]
"Service"="%AF夶À¨"
"Legacy"=dword:00000001
"ConfigFlags"=dword:00000000
"Class"="LegacyDriver"
"ClassGUID"="{8ECC055D-047F-11D1-A537-0000F8753ED1}"
"DeviceDesc"="Network Security Service (NSS)"

Thank you again for all your help!!!

Let's give this a try:

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as NSLEGACYrem.reg
(Set filetype to "All files")

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_*008F*0010%AF*00E5*0003*0017*001A*00A4*00B6*00C0*00A8]
"NextInstance"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_*008F*0010%AF*00E5*0003*0017*001A*00A4*00B6*00C0*00A8\0000]
"Service"=-
"ClassGUID"=-
"DeviceDesc"=-

Doubleclick the file we made and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Then reboot and let me know if you still get that error.

Regards,

Pieter
