Does this happen with every disk, or is it just one disk you're having problems with?
Some word processors used special hard-sectored disks that can't be read by a normal PC, unless you have a special program loaded onto the computer with DOS, Win3.1, Win98 (not WindowsXP/2000/NT) . You can tell by carefully rotating the floppy disk's insides by rotating the center hole. Watch the little pencil-sized hole. If it's a hard-sectored diskette, you'll see a whole bunch of holes pass by. On a regular floppy there's just one hole.
Here's another resource if it's a problem with every disk Troubleshooting Floppy Disk Drive Problems in Windows from Microsoft's Knowledge Base. If it's a problem with every disk you likely have a bad disk drive, or bad floppy drive controller on your motherboard.
