I have a desktop hooked to a Netgear wireless router through ethernet connection and a laptop with an internal wireless adapter. The router is connected to the internet via DSL. I can successfully access the internet from both the laptop and desktop.

The problem is: I'm trying to do file and printer sharing so ran the XP Home Network Wizard on both computers, but can't seem to get it to work.

- On the laptop in "My Network Places" it shows the laptop shared folder, but on the desktop "My Network Places" is empty.

- When I click on "View Workgroup computers" from the laptop it shows both computers but the desktop is unavailable. When I click on "View workgroup computers" from the desktop it gives me an error message -- "MShome not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact administrator.... List of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"

I've tried cofiguring through the wizard multiple ways but can't figure it out.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Since figured out a few things(from Microsoft support site) but still need help.

When I ping the desktop IP (192.168.0.2) from the desktop it times out. If I ping the router IP from the desktop it works fine.

Per the Microsoft support site, I upgraded the driver for my LAN card. Didn't solve the problem.

The next suggestion (from Microsoft) was to reinstall my TCP/IP stack. Looks difficult. It also seems odd to me that my internet connection would be working fine if the TCP/IP stack was bad.

Any thoughts on whether reinstalling the TCP/IP stack is the right next move? How hard is it -- should I risk it without professiona help?

Thanks.

Try WinSock XP Fix 1.2 to repair your TCP/IP stack.

Ran the Winsock fix you suggested but still can't "ping" my local computer successfully. Again, internet connection works fine, but can't see network resources from PC.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Todd

Do you have the XP firewall, or any other firewall installed on either of these systems?
