I hope you can help. I've worked through all of the "preposting" suggestions and have cleaned up the suggested entries. I'm still getting popups which are trying to sell me additional anti-spyware. One is titled "Security Center" with a shield that looks a lot like McAfee. It says it has detected spyware & that I should buy WinAntiVirusPRO. I'm also runnimg McAfee antivirus and security center. Here's the Hijack-This log. I hope this can be fixed since I'm basically unable to use my computer without repeated reboot due to lockups while using Internet Explorer.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Here are the three requested files. Please note that I was unable to get started up in regular Safe Mode, so used the Safe/Network accessible mode which seemed to work. Hope that doesn't affect the results? Also, CleanUp! deleted over 50000 files for 1.8G - that seems like a lot? Thanks again for your help - can't wait to see what's next.

I think it's better - I just surfed around for awhile & had none of those winfixer or antispyware popups. However, I walked away for a minute and came back to a message that explorer had encountered a problem & had to close, blah, blah , blah. Not sure what's up with that.

Opened the task manager to see what was running - most things I can't identify, but there are multiple SVCHOST.EXE files running - is that normal?

Can you give me any ideas about what was causing the trouble (what did it come in on - email, web site??) and how to avoid in the future?

It happens on occassion, but isn't necessarily related to anything malicious, but we'll run a couple of programs to check your computer out further, also would you like to remove optional items from startup to free system resources?

Yes it is normal. I've got 6 svchost.exe running right now

There are so many ways to get infected, it's impossible to say - could have come from anything. I do have recommendations to help prevent this in the future, the main recommendation is to get XP Service Pack 2, you've only got Service Pack 1 which makes your system more vulnerable.

Let's run full scans with Ad-Aware SE on your system:

Full Ad-Aware Scan
Please download from here:
Ad-Aware SE
Install Ad-Aware and run it. In the bottom-right hand corner, click "Check for updates now". Click "Connect" to download the newest reference file.

Now we will configure Ad-Aware to perform a full scan. In the Ad-Aware main window, click on the gear icon at the top of the screen to open the preferences window. In the "General" window, make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically save log-file
2) Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
3) Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Click the "Scanning" button on the left-hand side and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Scan within archives
2) Scan active processes
3) Scan registry
4) Deep scan registry
4) Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
5) Scan my Hosts file

Then click the "Advanced" button on the left-hand side and make sure all the options under "Log-file Detail Level" are selected. Next, click the "Tweak" button on the left-hand side. Click on "Scanning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Unload recognized processes & modules during scanning
2) Obtain command line of scanned processes
3) Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Click on "Cleaning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Always try to unload modules before deletion
2) During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
3) Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
4) Delete quarantined objects after restoring

Finally, click on "Safety Settings" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically select problematic objects in results lists
2) Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)

It's a bit more quirky as it runs WinME - dell has given me grief over downloading windows updates in the past. We basically had crashed & burned at one point.

It's legitimate - those are your Windows updates. It does that because of the fact that you have Windows set to automatic update. Automatic updates just means security updates will be automically downloaded and once completely downloaded you have to install them, which is why it notifies you. If you keep your Windows up to date you won't see that nearly as often. Next time it wants to install updates, let it

a-squared Free is a trojan removal tool. To be able to use it, you must set up a free a-squared Account, to get access to the update server.
Please setup an a-squared account at the following link:

Then download a-squared free from this link:

Install it and update it.

Then boot your computer to safe mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly on reboot until you get a boot menu. From this boot menu choose safe mode.

Once in safe mode fire up a-squared and let it run. Do not fix anything yet lets just see what it finds. When it is done scanning click the save log as html button.

Reboot to normal windows and upload that html file with your next post. I will go through and analyze the log to tell you if any of the files should not be removed. Please post a new HiJackThis log as well.
